Kerry Calls on Rice to Testify

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - John Kerry said Saturday the White House is committing character assassination with its treatment of former counterterror chief Richard Clarke to avoid responding to questions about national security. Kerry also said Condoleezza Rice , President Bush 's national security adviser, should testify in public before the commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.
"If Condoleezza Rice can find time to do `60 Minutes' on television before the American people, she ought to find 60 minutes to speak to the commission under oath," Kerry told reporters. "We're talking about the security of our country."

Bush campaign spokeswoman Nicolle Devenish said Kerry and other Democrats are trying to politicize the work of the commission.
"John Kerry seeks to distract Americans from his own failed ideas for protecting America from future attacks," she said in a statement. "John Kerry's backward-looking approach would return us to the failed policies of treating terror as a law-enforcement matter."

2. If we compare the campaign

to a championship boxing match, then the last round (week) was not a very good one for bush. It's kind to compete when you've had the wind knocked out of you. I've said before that in boxing, you don't have to win every minute of every round, or even every round. But Kerry won this one big. Serious damage has been done, and that is why the bush corner is telling him to come out swinging hard this round. Kerry needs to make bush miss with one wild punch, then counter him hard with a combination. There isn't going to be a "bush recovery" in this fight, folks. Kerry is kicking the crap out of him.

11. I'm hoping that Ed Bradley is at his best tonight

Ed skewered Ken Lay way back before Enron collapsed, many months before anyone else got the story right. 60 Minutes had done their homework and questioned the screwy business practices of Enron. I hope Bradly and 60 Minutes come with their A Game tonight. 60 Minutes is still the only dependable news group you can count on besides PBS.

Richard Ben-Veniste, a Democratic commissioner, noted in an interview with The Associated Press that several White House staff in recent years have appeared before legislative bodies, including former national security adviser Sandy Berger when he was in office. Rice's several media appearances also undermine the White House's position, he said.

"I fail to see the logic on the one hand relying on the confidentiality of such communications with the president and yet appearing everywhere except the one entity that has been created for the express purpose of investigating and holding public hearings on 9/11," he said.
