Bush already beat McCain
this is the poorlest logic in the Kerry/McCain nonsense, which in my view is about as idiot as the Freeper claims Hillary will be the VP. How does McCain guarantee us victory at the bottom of the ticket, when Bush beat him already?

1. Bush beat McCain, narrowly, and in the Republican primaries,
and to do even that, he had to run the dirtiest, most defamatory campaign in recent electoral history.

Republican primary voters are not reflective of the overall political makeup of the United States. The voters with whom McCain would help Kerry most - independents and moderates on both flanks, don't generally vote in Republican primaries. Hard core Republicans, the guys who put Bush over McCain in 2000, aren't going to vote for Kerry anyway so who cares what they think?

9. Hmmmm
"Bush beat McCain, narrowly, and in the Republican primaries,"

and to do even that, he had to run the dirtiest, most defamatory campaign in recent electoral history.

---Gee that sounds awfully familiar.

2. primary voters are more partisan
mccain's appeal was mostly among moderates and independents. but primary voters tend to be more partisan bringing out the more right wing republicans and more liberal democrats. mccain won in michigan where anyone could vote and in new hampshire which has a lot of independents.

3. I don't know if I would support a Kerry/McCain ticket.
It would reinforce my thesis that the only difference between the two parties is the rhetoric.

5. Why?
McCain is a Republican and Bush is a Republican, and the differences between two members of even the same party are stunning. If you think that rhetoric is the only thing dividing the two parties, then clearly you haven't been awake the last three years.

17. Let's take a look at some of the issues:
Edited on Sat Apr-03-04 03:28 PM by brainshrub
Republicans Candidates:
Pro-Death penalty
Pro-Drug War
Voted for the Iraq War
Supported NAFTA

Democratic Candidates:
Pro Death penalty
Pro Drug War
Voted for the Iraq War
Supported NAFTA

Shall I go on?

I am a Democrat, but I'm not blind. This country is a one-party state with two pro-business factions vieing for power.

6. McCain was beat by the fundies.
Bush went crhristian right. McCain was a darling for independents and some dems. McCain was polling better against Gore than Bush was. They decided to go with Bush.

8. If McCain had been the Republican nominee
in 2000, he would have won in the greatest electoral landslide since 1984. In many ways, its a shame he didn't. He would have pulled the Republican Party to the left, which would have shifted the entire political landscape with it. Would Gore have been a better President? In the short-term, certainly, and by far. But in the long-term? I'm not sure.

7. You should all become familiar of the tactics Bush used to beat McCain
because we are already seeing them at play against the Democrats.

The 2000 GOP primaries are a textbook case of how a mediocre candidate can smear and demolish the stronger candidate.

10. LOL
Bush's autocalls in South Carolina accused McCain of fathering an illegitimate black child. Kerry's wife is technically an African-American, so maybe they might have something.

13. They accused his wife of being a pill freak...
And they associated McCain with "Liberals", the same way some of Kerry's enemies try to asscociate him with "corporate whores" or whatever...

16. The autocalls also accused McCain of being a Manchurian Candidate
who cooperated with the North Vietamese during his capture.

Basically the prototype for 2002 Georgia Senate race.

14. Teresa Heinz is not an African-American by any acceptable standard
anymore than Charlize Theron would be if she were to give up her South African citizenship for an American one.

15. Why not?
She's from Africa, isn't she?

I think it would be asinine if she went around calling herself an African-American, but she's as much one as anybody.

11. Well, I dont want McCain for VP either, but your logic is wrong,,,
Edited on Sat Apr-03-04 02:58 PM by Dr Fate
McCain lost the South Carolina Primary against Bush, ture- but are you familiar w/ the brand of RWinger from SC?

He may have lost some love with the Rush Limbaugh crowd, but McCain is quite popular with old-fashioned conservatives, vets, moderates and moderate Democrats...

12. It doesn't matter because...
McCain is not going to be the VP pick.

McCain is a repug and will be till he dies.

Let's talk less about McCain and more about our own Dem VP field.
