On buying revotes: Corzine and Rendell and donors. Who exactly will be paying for
these revotes? Who can buy these elections and a candidate? Big donors? Small donors? How open will donations be? Who is in charge of the donations? Should they be treated as campaign donations? Should there be a limit to the size of donations? I think this proposal for a revote for sale has a real potential to equally smack of backroom deals. It also sets a precedent that if you don't follow the rules for the primaries as set by the party, you can just go find a pile of money and have your own election.

Corzine calls for revotes in Michigan, Florida
He and Pennsy governor offer to raise half of $30M needed by Democrats
Monday, March 10, 2008
BY JOSH MARGOLIN
Star-Ledger Staff
Gov. Jon Corzine and Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell are calling on the Democratic Party to hold do-over primaries in Florida and Michigan -- and they're willing to raise millions to pay the tab.

The two Democratic governors, both supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential bid, said yesterday they favor new votes in the two states disqualified for holding their primaries too early, concerned that otherwise the party's nominee may be viewed as an illegitimate product of the back room....

1. If the re-votes are not caucuses
which Hillary has vowed not to accept, then I believe the Florida legislature has to pass a new law that makes this donation paid primary legal.

madfloridian might jump in here and correct me... but I'm pretty sure that no one other than Florida tax payers can, at present, pay for an election (and this would be an election).

A caucus is a whole different matter.

And the thing is... if a law has to be passed and signed to make this happen, might there not be some real shenanigans by the Florida GOP? Do we really want 2008 to be like 2000? Court cases and Florida vote counting?

2. There will be no re-vote in FL
It's not going to happen. Those telling themselves that there will be a new primary in FL would be better served by taking up a useful hobby or donating time to their community. Their fantasies are a waste of time.
