Rep. Geraldine Ferraro: "If Obama was a white man . . ."
"If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."

Rep. Geraldine Ferraro, D-NY, told the Daily Breeze of Torrance, Ca.,

1. In the context of her entire remarks, what I make of it is that she
ought to have kept silent on the subject unless she had something enlightening to offer.

She didn't.

Disagreeing with Ferraro

Between the Spitzer story, Geraldine Ferraro's own pioneering status, and the dog-bites-man character of offense-and-apology stories these days, her reported comment that Obama wouldn't be where he is if he were white didn't get all that much attention today.

I asked the Clinton campaign for a reaction, though.

"We disagree with her," said spokesman Howard Wolfson.

She should be fired, and while Hillary's is at it fire the asshole Wolfson.

23. WTF? Go listen again to her comments, in full. She's not saying ANYTHING
about personality. She's explicitly saying it's because of race. She is not a neutral party here either, she supports Hillary, so she is clearly doing the dirty work for Hillary. If you don't think Ferraro doesn't sync with the HRC campaign, you are very naive.

:kick:

7. to all the bots who will say "She only spoke the truth"...the only truth she spoke was:
"He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."

To shroud the real truth in race/sex implications does nothing but expose GF's innate ability to be a consummate politician and say anything that will 'apparently' assist her choice's position.

14. Geraldine sounds like she has been hanging out with Michael Savage
Is Geraldine speaking up for the poor downtrodden white man again, who never gets anything he doesn't earn fair and square by kissing all the right asses? Bush was quite lucky to be who he was, too -- he achieved a lot less than Obama to get there. Did Geraldine say the same about Bush? Would Hillary be in the position she is in without her "legacy" creds?

And she says Obama is lucky -- lucky that he is black? No, he is lucky he didn't have all the baggage of having bowed down to and/or enabled the neo-con takeover of this country. If the old guard had stood up for democracy when it was so critical and so obviously in jeopardy, the voters would not be so desperate for the brand new.

Perhaps if Geraldine could get beyond her outrage at this . . . this . . . upstart . . . she would see a constitutional law professor running for president at a moment when our constitution has been severely wounded and lies bleeding on the floor. So forgive us if the ER Trauma doctor looks better qualified than the plastic surgeon when it comes to the help we need right now.

15. 1984: Ferraro's ticket gets 36% of white men's votes, less than 45% of white women's votes...
... and over 90% of the votes of both black men and black women.

The people she's now playing grievance politics against are the same people who were her most loyal supporters back when she needed their votes. And the people she's playing grievance politics for are the people who let her down and handed Reagan a landslide.

But she's forgotten, of course.

18. Forgotten?
I think they simply take black votes for granted. They are having a hissy because blacks have a real choice this election cycle. It's not a given that blacks will help support their favorite son/daughter.

17. She spoke at my college in 1988
and all I remember from her speech was the badmouthing she gave Jesse Jackson, who was running a grassroots, issues-oriented campaign that year.

I put about as much credence in Geraldine's opinions as I do that of Fritz Mondale (i.e., not much). And I'm a Minnesotan.

19. Without the "Clinton" name where would Hillary Clinton be?

She always says I'm looking to be hired by the American Public. Well, if one takes a hard look at her "resume" I can't imagine why anyone would hire her for the job.

The repeat the mantra "35 years of experience" as if that will someone make Clinton a great leader.

If HRC was a black woman, she would have been forced out of the race long ago. With all the losses, they would treat her like a joke.

21. CNN has racists commentators?
From the CNN website:

'Mississippi could make it two for Obama -- he has a double-digit lead over Clinton in the latest state opinion polls.

The state has a larger proportion African-Americans (36 percent, according to the 2000 census) than any other state in the country. And black voters make up nearly 70 percent of registered Democrats. Those numbers appear to benefit Obama, who's overwhelmingly won the African-American vote so far this primary season.'

26. How is that racist?
They're basing their projections on demographics. They could have inserted the word "Caucasian", "Hispanic", etc... I would agree with you if they had only written the first two sentences, but the third indicates that they are making the connection because of African American voting trends this campaign season.

I'm not trying to say racism is not present in our society, because we clearly see examples of it every day, but I don't think this is an example of it.

Try FOX news and you may be more successful in coming up with an example.

38. I don't think it was a tactic. I think she just opened her mouth and
said something stupid. If you made Obama white had him doing the same actions - he would be as popular as he is - maybe even more popular. But also it was wrong to suggest race.
