I think we hear more about it b/c of early diagnosis. Your partner's father sounds like his cancer was not detected until he suffered bone loss or kidney problems. It manifests itself all over the body.

My dad was diagnosed in 2006 by virtue of a physical. We joke that my Dad being the ever precise, thorough (anal) engineer that he is, made sure that he took all physicals, promptly and seriously. His cancer was detected through some blood results. He felt like crap but didn't really know why.

So, he had in patient chemotherapy. My brother and I took turns driving to MD Anderson in Houston (I live in Dallas) so that we could be with my dad while he is in the hospital. Then he received an autologous stem cell transplant (his own stem cells) and this procedure makes new and better stem cells. Not allowed to use the prenatal stem cells b/c of Bush. My dad's treatment was very successful, thanks be to God, and the stem cells make more "normal" cells. My dad is in South America on vacation right now!

Also, my father, who is now 73 - about the same age as Ferraro- has been a Republican. He started voting for Dems with John Kerry and he is a COMPLETE Obama supporter now. He said that having to go through the pain and exhaustion of donating his own stem cells, motivates him to support any candidate who supports stem cell research.

But it, like any other cancer, must be monitored and I'm always worrying about him, though. :toast:
