James Moore: "Brutally obvious similarities between Hillary and democracy's Darth Vader, Rove"

If anyone has paid acutely painful attention to the political ministrations of Karl Rove over the past two and a half decades, it's me. And if there is anyone qualified to make comparisons between democracy's Darth Vader and Hillary Clinton, I stand at the head of that line, as well. And sadly, the similarities are so brutally obvious as to be disturbing.

First, there is this matter of her husband, a man I admired as president in spite of his teenage behavior. Sen. Barack Obama has run a campaign that has never mentioned race. In fact, ethnicity was not an issue until President William Jefferson Clinton made his comparisons of Obama in South Carolina to Jesse Jackson. We were on the verge of almost transcending such superficial nonsense until Mr. Clinton brought us back to 1968. And presently, we have the first female vice presidential candidate ringing the bell on the same topic. Geraldine Ferraro is, of course, a part of the Hillary Clinton campaign.

Senator Clinton plays the innocent on most of this by refusing to denounce these pronunciations. When she had the opportunity on 60 Minutes to tell the world that it is nonsense for the fear mongers to suggest Obama is a Muslim, she demurred with a qualified, "as far as I know" he's not. But she does know. Sen. Clinton and Obama have attended numerous Capital Hill prayer breakfasts together. Does she think he was playing the Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, perhaps trying to see what is going on with that whole Christianity thing? Isn't any person believable when they declare their faith until they have been vetted by the Clinton campaign?

She saved her campaign in Texas by acting like George W. Bush drunk on the ideas of Karl Rove. The 3 a.m. call ad that used fear to drive voters in her direction was nothing more than a desperate politician's attempt to tell everyone not even duct tape will save them if they vote for Obama. Created by Roy Spence of Austin, the ad was first deployed in 1984 in the Mondale campaign. (His ad agency also gave us, "You are now free to move around the country," and, "Don't mess with Texas," as memorable slogans.)

3. Many also credit Rove with destroying the GOP from within.

Or at least, crippling it by looking only at the present and not towards future elections. So maybe I should thank him?

5. What General Election has Hillary won?
What a ridiculous crock. And even if it were true, you say this like it's a good thing.

4. Obama really is very sneaky
Sen. Clinton and Obama have attended numerous Capital Hill prayer breakfasts together. Does she think he was playing the Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, perhaps trying to see what is going on with that whole Christianity thing?

6. Rove turned candidate's strengths against them. The Clintons have been made out as racists...
when there was never, ever a hint of racism at any time during their previous 40 years in public life.

IOW Hillary's strength has been turned against her -- which is EXACTLY what Rove would do.

Now, name the strength of Obama's that Hillary (as Rove) is turning against him?

When you realize you can't think of any, maybe you'll realize which campaign is really the 'rovian' one.

7. 60 minutes comments disingenuous
Her 60 Minutes comments appear to have been distorted. I haven't
watched it, but see the media matters article on it ....

Btw, I'm not a fan of Hillary, but she deserves fair reporting. The truth is bad enough.

11. I saw it
She was asked the question twice, here's the transcript:

CLINTON: Of course not. I mean, that's--you know, there is not basis for that. You know, I take him on the basis of what he says. And, you know, there isn't any reason to doubt that.

KROFT: And you said you'd take Senator Obama at his word that he's not a Muslim.

CLINTON: Right. Right.

KROFT: You don't believe that he's a Muslim or implying? Right.

CLINTON: No. No. Why would I? No, there is nothing to base that on, as far as I know.

KROFT: It's just scurrilous --

CLINTON: Look, I have been the target of so many ridiculous rumors. I have a great deal of sympathy for anybody who gets, you know, smeared with the kind of rumors that go on all the time.

Now, why did she go on and on when she first answered the question? A good politician (which she is), knows you nip those things in the bud. Instead she went "there is not basis for that. You know, I take him on the basis of what he says. And, you know, there isn't any reason to doubt that." plays right into the hands of people that think Obama is hiding something, because of course the lying Muslim Obama would be hiding his religion. She was then asked the question again, and still verbally allowed for people to think there might be evidence out there that proved he was Muslim. IMHO, by the time you get to the third statement, it just isn't a strong enough denunciation give what she said before (but that's arguable).

Now you might say she didn't mean that (and it is quite possible she didn't), but then why hasn't she come out since then and clearly stated Obama isn't a Muslim and she knows that? Her campaign knows there is a controversy, even if they think it is unfair, and they are capable of saying something about it. I searched their site and found nothing like that (nor have I heard anything on the news about such a statement). So why are they letting those doubts sit there? Perhaps it was a mistake at first, but being quiet about it is on purpose, imho.
