Hey Hillary! I Like Starbucks.
Edited on Wed Mar-12-08 01:43 PM by demdog78
I never thought I would see the day that a campaign for a democratic candidate would refer to the people in her own party as "Latte Liberals."

I always figured that something like that would be a right wing smear tactic. Then came that magical night in Texas when Hillary was introduced by a closet neo-con. My whole opinion of her and her campaign changed immediately.

Since then I have heard that phrase from her campaign repeatedly. At first it would really offend me. Now, not so much. I proudly call myself a "Latte Liberal" I thought that is what a big part of what this party was about.

Intelligent conversation and Progressive attitudes.

So, now I have a question. How far to the right do you have to be to start referring to people as "Latte Liberals?"

Obviously, you can't be a progressive and get away with it. You would be a complete hypocrite. I know Hillary proudly thinks of herself as a centrist. That is no mystery, at least not to anyone who pays attention.

How far to the right has she moved? How does she continuously get away with insulting half of the Democratic party and still remain a viable candidate? If McCain came out and called half of the republican party "trailer park trash rednecks" he'd be done. Sorry if I offended any trolls with that one.

Hillary supporters on here keep saying that Obama is the one tearing this party apart. I have news for you. Obama has never insulted the people who support Hillary Clinton. I have never heard anyone in his campaign make a disparaging remark about the Hillary people.

I have however heard Hillary, Bill and most of her surrogates repeatedly insult Obama supporters. Every week it's something new. It's getting to the point where I find it hard to even picture them as Democrats. Since when do we eat our own? That is not "just politics."

It's rotten. It's wrong. It's Republican.

So, I will continue to support the ONLY democrat still in the race.
Barack Obama.

I will continue to go to Starbucks as usual. They did get one thing wrong though. I don't like Lattes. I like Frappuccinos.

a*holes. They don't have to worry that people can't afford

The "great social agenda" and being "hip" are what they

That is me to a T. Don't care about anyone but myself. Oh, wait, no, that's not me because then I'd be a Republican.

Is your mind seriously that hindered by holding the two concepts that someone can have money and still care about those without money? I think your hatred of the "latte liberals" speaks more about you than I.

40. Really?
You've decided that based on what? I grew up the child of a steel worker so I will not apologize for studying hard, working hard, and having a great income now.

I could just take that money and squader as much as possible by voting for McCain. He will continue the Bush tax cuts and we will just continue to accumulate our wealth.

But some of us remember what it is like to not have the nice things, and also know how precarious it all is. The economy going down is going to effect me less, true, but when you're spending 12B month on war you start thinking about how it's eventually going to hurt everyone except the extremely wealthy. And even they are being hurt by the value of the dollar declining - it kills the investment income.

I'm a stay-at-home mommy who has no idea what the word "hip" even means anymore. I don't look to anyone to thank me for my campaign contributions or time I've spent at the polls (dragging the baby along) or time on the phones encouraging others to vote democratic. But I would appreciate it if you would think about the fact that people are individuals and you are painting an awful wide brush with your derisive and divisive statements and name-calling.

Something tells me you are voting for Hillary.

Since when is it written in stone that people who went to college don't care about poverty? Most of the people I know in social activism have degrees, so you tell me what part of getting an MSW to make $50K is hip.

41. What?
How do you parse the word "liberal" to arrive at that conclusion?

Let's review here:

lib·er·al
Pronunciation: \ˈli-b(ə-)rəl\
Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French, from Latin liberalis suitable for a freeman, generous, from liber free; perhaps akin to Old English lēodan to grow, Greek eleutheros free
Date: 14th century
a: of, favoring, or based upon the principles of liberalism bcapitalized : of or constituting a political party advocating or associated with the principles of political liberalism; especially : of or constituting a political party in the United Kingdom associated with ideals of individual especially economic freedom, greater individual participation in government, and constitutional, political, and administrative reforms designed to secure these objectives
— lib·er·al·ly \-b(ə-)rə-lē\ adverb
— lib·er·al·ness noun

cen·trist
Pronunciation: \ˈsen-trist\
Function: noun
Date: 1872
1often capitalized : a member of a center party
2: a person who holds moderate views
— cen·trism \-ˌtri-zəm\ noun
— centrist adjective

Using those definitions, how do you figure Hilly is liberal? How is she "more liberal" than Obama?

12. They over-roast their drip coffee. Their espresso is good
The problem is they roast their drip coffee almost as much as they roast their espresso.

Now, their espresso is actually pretty damn good for a chain coffee house. But they use way too much sugar in their drinks (I assume to broaden the appeal) and their idea of a breve is frankly absurd (though the good baristas will know what to do if you say, "And I mean I want an actual breve").

11. "Latte liberal" is a bastardization of that old Republican saw,
"liberal elitists." Hillary's campaign manager, Mark Penn, is a Republican operative. He's using the Republican playbook, and laughing his way to the bank as he screws over the Democratic Party's primary process. The Clintons are vile because they are taking down the Democratic party and will offer to build nothing in its place. When this is over, unless Obama wins, there will be two flavors of neocons out there, one with a dollop of Christian facism and one with a hint of secularism, both keeping the masses feeding the maw of the war industry. Bill and Hillary Clintno have joined the neocon club and are earning their bones.

48. This is the same idea that got GWB elected
somehow bashing people who went to college unites the people in the heartland. Talking about being working class, ad nauseum, ingratiates them with the masses I guess. Almost like they're saying "See what an average joe I am? I also disdain higher education. Nevermind my degree from an elite university. I'm one of you, the salt of the earth."

Let me also say that I'm sick of the idea that the only real people in the country are those who live in small, rural communities in middle America. Those of us who live in cities and drink coffee mixed with steamed milk aren't real Ameriican patriots. I might as well be Louis XVI or something.

I'm more of a mocha man myself, but fancy coffee of all types is cool. Sometimes way too expensive, but cool nonetheless. Add some hot chocolate mix to your coffee and it's better than cream and sugar.

Are there really states where it's frowned upon to add powdered hot chocolate mix to your coffee??

20. Obama supporters just have good taste...
I will admit I do like my chai tea latte in the morning. Guess what? I also have progressive thoughts, a decent income, and believe voting should be about the "greater good" rather than singularly voting your pocketbook. Well, unless you are in the lower brackets and then you should definitely be voting your pocketbook because Bush has been royally screwing you over for 8 years.

Thankfully, Barack is more inclusive. I know his greater concern is for those who have little, and that he is going to hike my taxes. I'm ok with that because I know he will do what is best to spread the good around a little to other people through well-thought out programs (like student loans/grants with community service requirements - just one idea he has mentioned). I don't trust Hillary to do that. She is going to continue to lunch with the special interests, and when she raises my taxes it will be to vote for ridiculous projects like the Iraq war which is costing us 12 billion $$ a month. That $12B monthly would be a whole lotta lattes.

I know Hillary doesn't like me and she can call me all the names she wants. I don't like her, I don't trust her, and I'm not voting for her.

I'm not a big latte fan either, more Mochas or cappucinos.

But there's also something about the coffee house, that Starbucks is trying to capture, though it's kinda been yuppified by them. Old style nice hippiesque coffee houses where you can sit and relax and listen to hippies play hippie music. Even if you only go once, there's something really comforting about the memory. OTOH, I went to a hippie college, so maybe it's just me.

Ahhh, those were the days.

64. Hee hee - What kind of tea?
Lately I've been brewing up a batch green/white iced tea mix and then adding maybe a pint of pomegranite juice. Makes about 2 gallons of a pretty tasty and good for you beverage that's relatively inexpensive.

I never quite got into hot tea, though, except like Good Earth Cinnamon.

I love Harney's. Nice strong bergamot flavor.
Oh but what are you cooking up? Sounds yummy.

I just had some Earl Grey gelato from Il Laboratorio Del Gellato.
OMG I was in heaven. Take that you latte sippers. hahahahaha.

62. Since she is obviously disgusted by the wealth of those of us who can afford Starbucks
will she repudiate, reject, and renounce her campaign contributions from all billionaires and millionaires who have contributed to her campaign?

65. A derivitive of "Limousine Liberal," "Latte Liberal" is a term also used by neocons.
Pelosi mocked as S.F.'s 'latte liberal'
Conservatives say her rise helps them

(11-13) 04:00 PDT Washington -- As House Democrats prepare to make eight-term Rep. Nancy Pelosi their leader, a good portion of the ruling pundocracy seem to be having a grand time questioning -- if not outright ridiculing -- the party's judgment for turning to a San Franciscan.

"Are the Democrats about to go insane?" begins a feature on Pelosi in the latest edition of the "Weekly Standard," a popular journal among conservatives.

The story, running beside a cartoon sketch of the Pacific Heights resident is headlined: "The Pelosi Democrats: Are they going to become the stupid party?"

While Republican Speaker Dennis Hastert of Illinois and current Democratic leader Dick Gephardt of Missouri hail from the heartland, Pelosi's left coast home evokes stereotypes too powerful for political image-makers to ignore.

"Latte liberal," screams the conservative National Review. "About as San Francisco as you can get without digging up Jerry Garcia," says the Australian Financial Review to its readers halfway across the globe.

68. Another counterproductive use of Rethug memes
Does she actually think that in the event she is the nominee, this shit won't backfire on her? Not smart to sharpen the guillotine poised to slice off your own head.

70. It's triangulation. Pits one side, the "latte liberals" against the other side.
Creates confusion and division, conditions that Clinton thrives in.
