"12% of voters who don't like Obama say its because they think he's a Muslim"
Edited on Thu Apr-03-08 09:44 AM by sfam
This just ran on MSNBC. Well now we know why the Reverend Wright thing didn't hurt him. I can just imagine their dilemma - "How can he have a racist Christian preacher if he's a Muslim? I don't believe it..."

If there were ever a rationale for requiring a basic knowledge test prior to voting, this might be it. It really scares me that people can cast their votes with this level of understanding of the candidates...

3. Shocking but true...
Otherwise intelligent people fall for that right-wing line all the time. I was having lunch with my niece a few days ago when she said "Doesn't Obama worry you"? I asked her what she meant and she said "Y'know...all that Muslim stuff". My niece is an intelligent woman who doesn't keep up with politics. So, when she got one of those right-wing emails about Obama being a Muslim, she took it to heart. I explained the truth to her, but I don't think I made a dent. Fear is more powerful than truth.

8. The fear of the "other".
Some people are easily stirred up by the prospect of someone being President who is not exactly like them. They can't voice their racism--not politically correct, even on the Right, so they cry out that he's of a different religion, and a scary one at that!

Well at least it's only 12%! If they could get to know him personally they'd sing a different tune, I'm sure. He's more of a "regular guy" than the current Occupant by far. Grew up middle class. Did his own dishes. Worked in dangerous neighborhoods in Chicago. Etc.

13. Are you math challenged?
Your OP says "12% of voters who don't like Obama."

That means 88% of voters who don't like Obama dislike him for reasons other than "they think he's a muslim."

The figure you cited has nothing to do with how many people LIKE Obama, and neither does my response.

Is there something about the idea that 88% of the people who don't like him base that dislike on something else that you aren't able to grasp?

Thankfully, he does not yet have the nomination wrapped up. I'm holding out for a deadlocked convention, myself, and will spend my late May primary vote to help achieve just that.

He won't be getting my vote in the GE; I'm still hoping for a decent Democrat to vote for.
