1. I'm worried about my in-laws. They live in a small, $125,000 condo and both are disabled now.
Neither one went to college and both worked hard all their lives, saved their money and invested. Now they're counting on those investments to provide for them for their remaining days. Lavish? Oh yeah, they got the sleep number bed right before my FIL's hip replacement. They're livin' large.

Capital gains tax absolutely affects them.

6. Did they not make them tax deferred?
So they could pull them out at a lower income tax rate? I can't think of any seniors who didn't invest in that manner, except the millionaires.

10. That's what I'm saying.
It's unfortunate how the plutocrats have conned the masses into into believing that taxing the investor class hurts them. I've actually seen DUers who oppose the estate tax, because they heard it puts family farms out of business.

9. What kind of invesments are they?
Because if they are (non-qualified) IRAs or 401ks they are paying ordinary income tax on them, which can be way higher than capital gains. Same thing for any gains they have on CDs or savings. Furthermore, if they have investments that are affected by capital gains, then they are more fortunate than 80% of the country.

3. That's alright......
Some don't realize that they can put latitudes on capital gains, and make the rate go up effectively depending on your income, etc....

Or else they know, but don't want to admit it.

As an accountant, I can assure folks who literally survive on selling stocks ect., that capital gains tax can be made to tax those with millions versus the folks with not much.

8. Do you seriously see this as an issue
more important than two wars, a devastated economy, massive foreclosures, broken healthcare and oil's stranglehold on us?

Or, you know, lapel pins?

14. Listen, it's all important to me, but to answer your question
I don't equate the government confiscating 15% of my money to waste on this aforementioned war and other pork with a flag lapel pin

16. Hey I'm not going to tell you I want the Gov
taking more of my money either. Or that there isn't colossal waste that could be cut instead of raising capital gains taxes.

And if this debate had touched on a whole bunch of these more important issues and also happened to include questions about capital gains, I really have no problem with that - in that context its a legitimate issue.

But in the 'gotcha' forum that this debate was, obviously it was more important the Gibson shout out "OMG he's going to raise taxes!!!" rather than any real discussion on the issue of why it might or might not be a good idea.

(and lets not forget the current Bozo in Chief is running record deficits - that money has to come from somewhere, like it or not. Only so much more we can borrow from China).

I'm not rich and I'm not a hotelier. Think about what atrocities our government has spent our money on in recent years and ask me again why I'd like to see them taking less of our money.

18. You aren't working class either. That's for sure.
People working 2 jobs to scrape by aren't worried about capital gains. And frankly, I'm more concerned with helping them than you.

13. That was the only part of the debate I watched
I couldn't believe what an ass he is, he asked a question then adds the repug talking point "if you raise taxes revenues will go down". Then no matter how they answer they are wrong, talk about media bias. I couldn't believe both of them let him get away with it. Why didn't either one of them say if that was the case why aren't we running a surplus after all the Bush tax cuts? That crap drives me nuts, we have a talk show guy here that is constantly raising hell about the deficit then calls Democrats tax and spend. I just can't figure how anyone with half a brain can't figure out if you spend more than you take in you have a deficit.
