Unbelievable response I just received from ABC affiliate
Edited on Thu Apr-17-08 03:56 PM by medeak
this from the general manager after I emailed complaining lack of substantive questioning in last night's debate:

"How about non-substantive responses, for instance Obama’s response regarding increasing the capital gains tax? I will forward your emails to ABC. Thanks."

by the way...he's the manager of Reno, NV ABC affiliate...if anyone would like his email I will be happy to provide it

edited to say... here it is for your convenience:

I saw his response, it was on the money. Everybody can't talk tax cuts while we are bankrupting the nation. He's the only honest one on the issue. You are lying to yourself. Nice going.

49. I saw it, it was substantive if you want to face the problem, non-substantive
if you want to bankrupt the government. To those, anything other than "cut taxes" is non-substantive. You cannot lay it out in sound bites, it's a massive endeavor, and quite possibly too late.

http://time-blog.com/curious_capitalist/2008/01/do_capital_gains_tax_cuts_incr.html

A better test is whether receipts are higher over the course of an entire business cycle. Last week, as part of its latest 10-year budget projections (pdf!), the Congressional Budget Office published its estimate of capital gains receipts in fiscal 2007. I'm willing to bet that, recession or no, FY 2007 will prove to be a peak in capital gains receipts that won't be matched for several years. Which means we can compare it with the peak of the last cycle, in 2000. Here's the chart, with the numbers adjusted for inflation:

So no, the reduction in the capital gains tax rate from 20% to 15% in 2003 did not result in an increase in revenue over the course of the business cycle. In 2000 receipts totaled $119 billion, which equals $143 million in 2007 dollars. In 2007, they totaled $122 billion. That's a 15% decline.

Now I guess you could argue that 2000 was the peak of a once-in-a-lifetime stock market boom, making it an unfair comparison. But that would amount to admitting that forces other than the capital gains tax rate determine the course of the stock market. Perish the thought!

22. You didn't write the correct person.
Is the ABC affil. in Reno actually owned and operated by ABC? If not, then you didn't write ABC at all, but whatever company owns that affiliate. You probably just annoyed the fuck out of the GM of that station.

24. not necessarily the case
Yes, the Reno affiliate (which, in this case, is owned by Gray Communications) didn't control the debate. On the other hand, local affiliates have the most to lose if the network alienates viewers and therefore they have reason to communicate back to the network when they hear from their viewers that the network screwed up. So, in fact, the best approach when objecting to something that a TV network has done is to direct your objections both to the network and to the local affiliate.

30. If you're talking about licensure, that that alone is a dead topic.
In the entire history of the FCC only one station has ever lost its license for not serving the community. The FCC is and always has been a toothless tiger.

If you're upset with ABC, go after the advertisers.

32. not talking about licensing
Talking about viewership. It takes fewer viewers to get the attention of a local station than it does to get the attention of the network or national advertisers. If a local station thinks that something that the network is doing is causing the local station to lose viewers, it will communicate that back that up to the network. But you are right that letting advertisers know also is important.

23. Tell him when they go after McCain like the did Obama you'll apologize.
Ask McCain about the rumors he sold us out as a captive (show the film with him denouncing the US) the he was a bad pilot, that his wife is a drug addict who steals drugs and recipes, that he wants to bomb Iran and stay in Iraq for 100 years, that he has a horrid temper, that his fellow Senators HATE him (even the GOP ones, except maybe Hillary and Lieberman, they like him) ask him why he now favors tax cuts and show the clip of why he didn't before, or why did he back down on torture, or habeus corpus, go after him on the the nut cases who support him, the religious ones who think the Catholic church is a whore.

Let Randi Rhodes write the questions for McCain at a debate with him like Hannity did for this one and let Rachael Maddow be the moderator.

When they do a debate like that? I'll call it even.

But you know it will NEVER happen.

im sure the poor people in our country are really worried about the capital gains taxes. they probably dont even know what the hell that is.

Obama:

I certainly would not go above what existed under Bill Clinton, which was 28 percent.

Hillary:

I would not raise it above what it was during the Clinton administration.

51. Public File
every Radio/TV station is required to have a public file. In these files are copies of licenses, letter from public, e-mails, EEO stuff and a bunch of shit from attorneys about leases - Any person can make an appt to view the public file - and once in a blue fucking moon, the FCC sends around a person to check up on the PF and gives the station a grade. I bet however - since the Bushies have been in, there hasn't been one FCC person out there checking the PF's.

44. Gibson is an Elitist... He wanted to go into law, but he wasn't SMART enough
Born in Evanston, Illinois, Gibson moved to Washington, D.C., when he was 12. He attended the prestigious Sidwell Friends School, a private college-preparatory school in the city. Gibson graduated from Princeton University where he was news director for the university radio station, WPRB-FM and a member of Princeton Tower Club. He now serves on Princeton's Board of Trustees. Originally, Gibson planned to go into law, but reconsidered when he determined his grades were not sufficient for top tier law schools.
