If you want your media to cover the issues, then shut up about the non-issues.

What have we discussed in here, and generally elsewhere in the media, for the last several weeks?

Jeremiah Wright
The Bosnia Sniper Story
"Typical White People"
The support of NAFTA, but not the policy itself
Rezco
"Bitter" gay-hating gunlovers in PA

And the list goes on.

Look, when it comes down to this capitalist-democratic system, there are two realities we must face about ourselves:

WE - no one else - ARE THE VOTERS

WE - no one else - ARE THE CONSUMERS OF MEDIA

They want to appeal to us, appeal to our tastes, our sensibilities, and our interests of the moment.

If you read in here (as one example), we're not breaking down social security taxation while the mainstream mass media are talking about these issues. THEY ARE REFLECTING EXACTLY WHAT'S ON OUR MINDS AT THE MOMENT. THAT'S HOW THEY EARN OUR ATTENTIONS; THAT'S HOW THEY MAKE THEIR MONEY.

Regardless of what pop social science literature has told you otherwise, the genesis of media content starts and ends with the American viewer, and if we're talking about distracting non-issues, then they will talk about distracting non-issues.

So as we get angry at ABC for doing what we've been doing for the last few months, then maybe we should take a moment for self-assessing our own behaviors. We're a part of the problem, too.

On edit: To clarify that I'm jabbing my INDEX finger in the air... my I-N-D-E-X finger. Mmm'kay?

6. I want to add to my original points because I am out of posts for the day.
I agree that the debate was not substantive in the beginning... that's fine. However, when we did discuss substance - the issues - Hillary Clinton did rather well. She cleaned up.

So is the complaint truly about not discussing the issues, when Barack Obama didn't do so well when we finally discussed the issues?
