McCain Republicans Have A Meltdown in Nevada Heat

Nev. GOP recesses state convention, angering supporters

Sun Apr 27, 1:37 PM ET

RENO, Nev. - Outmaneuvered by raucous Ron Paul supporters, Nevada Republican Party leaders abruptly shut down their state convention and now must resume the event to complete a list of 31 delegates to the GOP national convention.

Outnumbered supporters of expected Republican presidential nominee John McCain faced off Saturday against well-organized Paul supporters. A large share of the more than 1,300 state convention delegates enabled Paul supporters to get a rule change positioning them for more national convention delegate slots than expected.

"I've seen factions walk out. I've never seen a party walk out," said Jeff Greenspan, regional coordinator for the Paul campaign.

...

State Sen. Bob Beers, the convention chairman, was booed loudly as he called for a recess Saturday evening.

1. With all this talk about the Democrat's "meltdown" primary contest...
... I thought it might be cheerful to show that the Republicans are capable of similar charlie foxtrots on their own.

3. my bad. Here's a link. The GOP can't even shoot straight ...
... when they've already picked their candidate! This is the "united, unstoppable, swift-boating" party we're supposed to be afraid of in November?

4. As I look at it, it looks like Nevada went for Mitt Romney...
...and McCain was third place behind "He Who Must Not Be Named". It's no wonder his people are up in arms at the convention.

5. Apparently the story has hit the Associated Press, too.
Republicans stumbling over their own feet is pretty funny.

9. The same thing happened in Minnesota CD 6, where
Paul supporters were elected to most of the delegate positions. Outmaneuvering McCain supporters.

11. Now that is VERY interesting...
John McCain is supposed to have won in Minnesota, and Paul only got something like 5% of the vote there, right?

12. This is like Mike Gravel coming from behind
and taking over the Democratic primary in some state or other.

13. I think it's imporant to recognize that a lot of these guys are anti-war Republicans
I do sympathize with the Paulians. They're confused about some things, but at least they're passionate about fixing the country.

17. Visible support for Ron Paul here...
I'm in N TX, and see lots of Ron Paul stickers.

McCain stickers? I saw one back in January.

19. I see a TON of Ron Paul stuff on a regular basis here in Illinois.
Paul's campaign didn't beat the odds, but the whole endeavor deserves study. They **really** latched onto something powerful. I would not be surprised whatsoever if the organizers of his campaign get hired away for Democrats and (mainstream) Republicans next cycle.

I don't like a lot of the Paul platform, but his ideas about getting rid of corporatism really caught my attention.

20. I think it's pretty simple really.
He managed to tap into the anger at corporatism, without threatening the incomes of the rich.

By ignoring tax fairness, he lets voters have their anti-corporate cake and eat it, too.

23. The anti war position is strong, too.
He and Kucinich have been pretty adamant against it from the beginning.

24. Yes... much better "choice" presented to the public.
As opposed to Hillary, who not only backed up the "Al Qaeda has ties to Iraq" lie in her IWR speech... but was still backing the "Iraq was a threat" lie 10 months into the war.

15. this is why I don't understand the fear and trembling over him.
If this kind of thing continues, he won't even be bringing a unanimous collection of states behind him to his "uncontested" convention. I think there's a pretty big split in the GOP. Ron Paul has said it's very unlikely he'll endorse McCain, and I don't see the Paulistinians voting for someone their little leader doesn't recommend. I think they'll probably stay home, write him in or vote for some libertarian as a protest vote.

18. To be fair... any Republicans who support McCain
wouldn't really see any point in voting for him, because he's already their nominee. The supporters for other candidates, not so much. So I think we can safely say the support for McCain was most likely underrepresented.

21. True, but Ron Paul did get a lot of support in PA.
Coupled with the NV GOP story of Paulites taking over, there might be something there.
