Is Obama campaigning in WV?
Should he or should he just skip it?

1. Take a few days off, rest, meet with supers, then go to WV
Edited on Wed May-07-08 05:10 PM by Jersey Devil
He at least has to make a show of campaigning there out of respect for the voters. It would also be a great spot for him to preview some of his general election type speeches to see how they are received. I don't think he should even mention Hillary once.

8. Not enough time to take a few days off.
Clinton is holding a commanding lead in the state right now and Obama needs to use every day to start getting that lead down.

The idea is to get it down to within 10 in my view. And that is possible if we work hard! Such as phonebanking! http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/phonebankmap/

20. Yeah, but Obama himself needs some rest
He was great last night, sounded and looked totally energized again for the first time in a while. But my bet is that he was running on adrenaline and sometimes you just have to shut it down and relax, even if only for a day or two.

Phone banking, ads, literature, sure, go all out. But let him just do enough appearances to make it look like an honest effort without knocking him out.

22. I said the same after PA but he did not do it.
I hope he rests too (As Clinton seems to have done so) but I doubt it.

4. I think he should spend far more time in KY
But he shouldn't ignore West Virginia.

I would do three big events in Wheeling, Morgantown, and Huntington and move onto KY.

5. Well, what's the point?
After all, Hillary is going to win ALL the upcoming contests by 90%, and all the supers will be flocking to her now that he doesn't have a chance of winning.

He might as well concede.

:sarcasm: for the reading impaired.

7. We gotta keep her from nabbing too many delegates
I don't think he needs to win there, he just needs to keep her from getting the 2/3 or so that would toss a bunch more delegates in her corner. Not that it matters that much in a state of only 39 delegates, but still.

Also not letting it appear that the pendulum could be swinging back is important.

I don't think it really matters much, but it may matter in November if he forsakes WV now. Keep her from getting 2/3 in WV and KY and I think we'll be golden.

The "presumptive nominee" is going to lose by 30 points.

26. I think you're right
I expect him to lose by 30 points. All the polls are showing it. It will be a large number loss for him, but I just don't see it as a "big" loss. It's a state that's essentially in her pocket, like Hawaii was in Obama's.

IMO, though, if he can keep it under 33%, it'll have a minimal impact on the rest of the race (she'll net, what 2-5 delegates), and while KY will go the same way, he'll have a nice, more significant Oregon victory to buffer that on the same night.

Anyway, just my thoughts.

David

12. Right if she starts getting a flood of delegates from these states and popular vote...
She may consider going to the convention and trying her luck there.

It is very important that we work HARD to try to turn WV into VICTORY!

14. Not really
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oregon_Democratic_primary%2C_2008

He is in the lead in that state already and still has plenty of time to do campaigning there after WV.

The goal right now is to keep these states within 10 points and so far it is going to be difficult to do that for WV

28. Ken Hechler, one of our best progressives in W.Va.
and a fascinating life story. google him.

PBS is airing a bio film on him nationwide this month.

and for the record, Obama's been here once for a Charleston and Beckley visit about a month ago.
The campaign has offices all over, but no word on him coming back before Tuesday. I think he's writing it off-or given Clinton's huge lead here (her biggest outside Arkansas), he may think it looks better not to have campaigned here.

30. I hope he does come..and if he has time
he really should, imo. He's never written off a state before and now's not the time to start, again imo.

Thanks for the Ken Hechler info..I read the article when it came on weeks ago with him endorsing Obama and it was grand.

Ken Hechler was Secretary of State of West Virginia(my bad)

<snip>

"Charleston, WV — On Monday, former West Virginia Secretary of State and United States Congressman Ken Hechler endorsed Senator Barack Obama for president, citing Obama’s ability to bring the country together and change Washington.

Hechler, also a former professor at Marshall University, discussed Obama's ability to inspire Americans and bring lasting change to this country.

“I’ve taught courses on the presidency and great presidents are able to inspire and communicate. The last four great ones were Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, John Kennedy and Ronald Regan. Obama has that same tremendous inspirational ability and he, among all the candidates, will be able to lead this country.

"As Secretary of State, I know what it takes to win votes and Senator Obama has a very strong record with Independents and he has successfully energized young people to participate. Thousands of young people reach the age of 18 and don’t register, but Obama is inspiring them. With Obama in the White House, we will make tremendous progress in restoring the prestige of this nation throughout the world,” said Hechler in a prepared statement."

19. he needs to sprint through the finish line, looking & acting like the nominee
Something has happened that has not happened before. Suddenly the media are yelping like a pack of dogs with a cornered skunk, and Hillary is that skunk. They have crossed the bridge from Rev Wrong to Delegate Math 101. They realize she has lost it, and she is losing 90% of the Democratic party's most loyal demo.

I think he needs to focus on his game and let her chase her own tail the next few weeks.

32. There is a post somewhere
explaining about WV and in that same post someone mentioned
that there where about 8 Obama supporters there.

West Virginia is predominantly racist and that should be a
concern.

Seriously, I think he should show up just to cut in to her
lead, but be prepared for Hillary to use race there, this
looks like the perfect environment for that.

One or two showing won't hurt.....
