What is Hillary Clinton's future in the Democratic party?
Edited on Fri May-09-08 09:57 AM by TwoSparkles
If Hillary isn't going to be the Democratic nominee, does anyone want to take a guess
at what she will be doing?

She banked everything on this. Does she really want to return to the Senate? My guess
is that she was only in the Senate, so she could make an eventual Presidential run.

Last week, there were several pundits talking about how a return to the Senate would be
very difficult for her--because most of the Senate is with Obama. Hillary enjoyed a
great deal of power and influence in the Senate, and much of that was hinged on the
fact that she would soon be the Democratic nominee for President, and most likely,
win the 2008 election.

She would return to the Senate without that leverage, and also to a room full of Obama
supporters--rallying around a rock-star President and a new day in American politics--that
doesn't really include her--unless she wants to change her DLC ways. I can't imagine this
being a desirable position for her.

Perpetuating this race is becoming a farce. Many Democrats are losing respect for her. She
could cause real damage to herself if she continues with this pointless campaign, and also
with her incendiary comments about having the "white vote."

Seems to me, that she's on her way to completely destroying herself in the political world.

Will she bow out of politics after this race? Will she return to the Senate?

Anyone who believes that she will be selected as Obama's running mate--is not thinking clearly. Obama
is running on change, and she's part of the DLC/neocon faction--and Obama is running to save
our country from the likes of that nonsense. He may get pressure to select Hillary, but in the end,
it will be his decision--and he's not going there. At the very most (and I highly doubt it), I could
see her in a cabinet position, but certainly not veep.

So--what does Hillary do? Consulting? Speeches? I'm thinking that she's inflicted so much
damage on her political career--that she may not have a future in the Democratic party.

2. She's still very popular in the party
no matter what you guys say. She's got about as much support as Obama does, and nobody claims he's unpopular.

3. I'd say NY Gov, but I think the race baiting might have ended that for her
Black people in NY can't be too happy with her I would think and they sure aren't going to forget the slimy tactics she is employing now.

4. If she's not to be President, I still like the idea of her as Supreme Court Justice
I think she would make an outstanding Justice.

And anyone who would make fun of this idea can go fuck themselves.

13. She'd be good at that, but it's almost inconceivable that she'd be confirmed. (NT)

14. If she's stands for re-election in 2012, many Democrats may vigorously challenge her as well.
I think the odds are only 50-50 that she'll even stand
for reelection.

8. I am not sure what her future in the Democratic Party may be.
In order to get votes for her primary campaign she has seemed to work hard at polarizing Democrats. After Wisconsin, Obama seemed to be in such a dominant position that Clinton chose to do and say anything to destroy him in order to gain the nomination. Obama did not have much choice but to respond and to fight fire with fire.

I believe that Clinton's future depends upon how she sincerely mends fences with the significant portion of the party who did not support her. She has the potential to be a great Democratic senator and leader as long as becoming president is not her sole measure of personal success, that failing to attain the presidency does not make her a failure. Her future is largely up to her.

10. I Don't Think Anyone Can Predict
Emotions are high and tempers are short right now. For what it's worth I think a lot depends on the November elections. Like it or not, the Clintons will be seen as heroes or villains whether it's right or wrong.

Return to the Senate, sponsor a companion bill to HR 676 -- Medicare for All.

And then she should work to gain Senate support for it. She is on the Health, Education, Labor Senate committee. This would be perfect for her.

12. Tenuous at best
She has invested so much psychic energy in this presidential campaign I don't believe she will be satisfied with the life of a mere senator. She will not run again and she may not even complete her current term.

She was mentally changing the drapes in the WH the day bush was sworn in for his second term. She's felt entitled for so long that reality will not be enough for her.

16. Good points by everyone
I agree she has damaged her political capital and future with her tactics.

But the future will depend on how she conducts herself in exiting and after exiting this race.

Remember Nixon? He came back from the loss to Kennedy in 1960 and the California governor's race to become President in 1968.

In my humble opinion, she is toast because she doesn't know how to spell gracious.

Much as Carville, and Begala, do today.

20. If she drops out of the race but still gets the Michigan and Florida votes counted...
....I think that would be a very admirable thing on her behalf and will go miles in terms of getting Obama elected in November.

She'll be fine. She was demonized, pretty unfairly, as a result of certain people getting overzealous in support of their own candidate. Once supporters of that candidate realize that he, too, is a politician and a human being (and a good one of both, may I add) and not a messianic superman, they will come back down to earth when it comes to judging all of our elected officials.
