Native American Outreach in Montana
Native American Outreach in Montana

By Caitlin Harvey - May 10th, 2008 at 1:54 pm EDT

Last week, Samuel Kohn, a member of the Crow tribe and our campaign's Native American outreach coordinator in Montana, met with members of the "Rocky Boy for Obama" and "Blackfeet for Obama" groups in the Hi-Line region of Montana.

The meeting with the "Rocky Boy" for Obama" group took place on April 29 at Stone Child College. Samuel reports:

It was an amazing opportunity to be a part of that group. There were about 30-35 people at the meeting. It was really amazing to see the support, care, and interest that everyone had in Senator Obama's campaign. This was clearly expressed in one gentleman's, a well-respected elder on the reservation, statement about why he supported Senator Obama. He told me that he was 72 years old and had never voted before, but that he wanted to vote for Senator Obama because of everything he can do for us .

Samuel met with the "Blackfeet for Obama" campaign at the Blackfeet Tribal Council office in Browning on May 1. He said:

There was a lot of excitement and interest in Senator Obama's campaign at this meeting, particularly his strategies to bring about real and lasting change for everyone on every reservation across the United States. There were about 30 people at the meeting, and many want to remain closely involved with the campaign.

10. Every time I've seen his speeches, he has specifically included
Native Americans (as well as Latino's, Asians, gays, etc...). I don't recall another candidate doing that. :hi:

2. That makes me so happy
There aren't many places in this country that have been left behind more than those reservations on the hi-line. I think they've got fabulous potential for wind energy and hope they get a fair shake this time around.

3. I so appreciate you posting this! It's something I've wondered about, whether Obama had any
tribal outreach going. Good for him!

12. Native American Super Delegates for Obama - Yeah

By David Alire Garcia 05/09/2008 | 6 Comments
SANTA FE -- If Sen. Barack Obama needs a mere 170 more delegate votes to clinch the Democratic presidential nomination outright, he just got one vote closer.

That's because Laurie Weahkee, New Mexico's newest -- and most coveted -- superdelegate, just threw her support behind Obama.

"After the primary elections in Indiana and North Carolina, it is now absolutely clear that Barack Obama will be our nominee," Weahkee, lead organizer for the Native American Voters Alliance, writes in a statement e-mailed to the Independent. She adds, "Obama has proven that he can campaign in a difficult environment and still inspire thousands of new voices to take part in the democratic process."

Weahkee also had good things to say about Hillary Clinton -- "I’d like to recognize Senator Clinton for her many years of service to this country, and for laying the groundwork for women across this country to run for office" -- but in the end that wasn't enough to push the long-time New Mexico activist into her corner.
