Record Obama Crowd, the Size of a City
Record Obama Crowd, the Size of a City

By Matthew Mosk
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Sen. Barack Obama has seen his share of large crowds over the last 15 months, but his campaign said they have not approached the numbers gathered along the waterfront here right now.

The campaign, citing figures from Duane Bray, battalion chief of Portland Fire & Rescue, estimated that 75,000 people are watching him speak.

The scene suggests this is not an exaggeration. The sea of heads stretches for half a mile along the grassy embankment, while others watch from kayaks and power boats bobbing on the Willamette River. More hug the rails of the steel bridge that stretches across the water and crowds are even watching from jetties on the opposite shore.

Obama record: 75,000 in Portland
Posted May 18, 2008 6:19 PM

by Jim Tankersley

PORTLAND, Ore. - Some 75,000 people have turned out to see Barack Obama speak along the Portland waterfront, a record for the campaign.

The crowd covers the lawn here at Tom McCall Waterfront Park, from the streetside entry gates down to the Willamette River. Portland fire officials estimate 60,000 people are packed inside the park proper and another 10-15,000 are watching outside the gates. Spectators are lining the bridge behind Obama and watching, bikini-clad, from boats on the river.

<snip>

"If you vote for me on Tuesday," he "We won't just win Oregon. We'll win this nomination, we'll win this general election. And you and I together, we'll change this country, we'll change the world."

Seventy-five thousand people seemed to like the sound of that.

9. Don't you know
It just doesn't compare to the small table size speeches according to Hillary.

On Friday - Speaking to a group in which reporters outnumbered supporters by at least 3 to 1.
“When you have just the big events with the rallies and all the rah-rah and all the speeches and the lights and everything,” she said, “it doesn't mean as much to many people as to be included and actually hear the stories and the concerns that everybody has.”

47. Keep kicking and write to ask why CNN didn't "truly" cover this rally
for what it was, a record breaker!

My letter to CNN That I sent at this link: http://www.cnn.com/feedback/forms/form4.html?98

Dear Mr. Sanchez,
Why didn't CNN show more of the Obama rally where 75,000 people showed up to hear him speak? And why was it not on CNN Live online? I had to watch it online via a local Oregon affiliate.

It appears that a few weeks ago, CNN was obsessed with nonstop Pastorbating to the topic of Rev. Wright. However, inexplicably, a political rally reporting 75,000 people attending is only briefly covered. Oh certainly, I got to see CNN reporter at the rally blathering on and on about his views and opinions as to what he was seeing, but I would have much preferred seeing it myself via your camera lenses.

I am very disappointed in CNN, and realize that I can't trust your programming priorities whatsoever. Maybe that is why no one pays attention to you all anymore, in particular when it appears that you have an agenda that has nothing to do with providing true information to your viewers. 75,000 in attendance is a giant deal, and I'm sure if McCain or Clinton would have been the ones to have achieve such, it would have been talked about and shown on CNN for the next 5 days. Meanwhile we are treated to repeated replays of McCain's appearance on SLN as though that is where the story is (since there can only be one story). I find this peculiar.

So due to the oddity of your coverage, I will remember this CNN weirdness, and I will discuss this "strange" coverage priority with all whom I know.

Respectfully,

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

-------------

I can only think that maybe CNN doesn't want its audience to see so many White Faces coming out in support of the tall Skinny Black/White Dude talking the truth?

86. I had CNN with sound off (I was on the phone) but saw that they did a piece
It was on their political broadcast and all I saw was snippets of Obama and the rally and the headline was "It's Getting Crowded/Tens of Thousands Turn Out for Obama" or something like that.

71. "we'll change the world."
I find this a bit odd and disturbing - especially in light of the fact that Obama's never really changed too much before.
