3. Yes, especially if he is a BLACK MAN
addressing a white woman.

Certainly would DISQUALIFY him from being President. At the very least.

And he would have to TRANSFER ALL OF HIS CAMPAIGN FUND to the other candidate when he withdrew

ALONG WITH A PLEDGE FROM ALL OF HIS SUPPORTERS TO MAX OUT FOR THE OTHER CANDIDATE.

That would be the only fair reaction.

5. A barmaid at Vinny's Boom Boom Room called me "sweetie" a few days ago
I'm a guy and she calls all the guys "sweetie". So if I were a woman and the barmaid was a bartender would it be "sexist" or just someone being friendly in their own strange sort of way?

7. I am a man and I have been called "sweetie" many times by women clerks and waiters.
I don't mind a bit. I have noticed it more south of the Mason Dixon line. "Hon" and "Honey" are also used frequently. No big deal, I say. It is just some folks way of talking, a cultural thing.

Not only does everyone call each other honey, sweetie, sugar and more, the men run in front of you to open doors and they bless you at every opportunity. Despite being a "northerner" (or "yankee" as they say down here), I don't take offense at any of it. Do you know why? Because it's harmless. A few more kind words and gestures on the part of all of us wouldn't hurt at all. Do you know what is harmful? Presidential candidates who offer to obliterate other countries. That's a harmful action.

50. I've only lived in WI and IL
The company I worked for was Florida based, but I lived in Chicago and travelled to our clients in the "north". The weirdest thing about the Southern guys (from Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia) was that they didn't own coats! They considered going to LaCrosse, Wisconsin in March a fate worse than death. I actually fell in love with WI after travelling up here for clients.

I actually prefer "sweetie" to "maam"; the latter makes me feel OLD.

17. Partial list of people who've called me "sweetie" in the past couple weeks.
1. My mom.

2. An elderly guy on the bus I gave up my seat to.

3. Three of my (female) co-workers. (also all above 50 or so)

4. One of my (female) editors when I helped talk her down from an anxiety attack. (she's younger than me).

5. A (young, male) store clerk trying to flirt with me. It was playful and friendly so it didn't bother me a bit. (Flirting isn't harrassment - I know the difference when I feel it.)

6. A (young, female) Starbucks barrista apologizing for getting my order wrong and giving me a free coffee.

7. A (middle-aged, male) bartender.

None of these offended me in the least.

In a professional setting, as it was in Obama's case, it's totally inappropriate.

27. I get "sweety" a lot nows days. I have gone thru a number of stages in my life.
First as a boy not knowing my ass from shinola. Then a young man chasing (without much success) the skirts. Middle age was a stage some would call lecherous, a term i always thought was a little harsh. But at a certain age the young ladies stopped frowning at me and hurrying away and started smiling at me. I first thought wow they are finally seeing me as the handsome man I am. Then it dawned on me. I could read clearly in their smiles, "what a sweet, harmless old man." Harmless, omg please not me. That's when they started calling me sweety. What a cruel thing to do.

34. As a woman and an Obama supporter
I would guess that reporter cured him of the habit of calling women "sweetie" for good. Through the years I've been called "hon," "doll," and "shuge" (short for "sugar"). Depending on who it was, it was OK, eyebrow raising, or icky. OK was people I knew who called everyone that because they weren't good with names. Eyebrow raising when someone I didn't know called me that, and icky was when I was called that by some old fart trying to flirt. In Obama's case, it would have been eyebrow raising for me. He really should have known better, and now he does.

I cured many an old fart by laughing (not angrily) and replying, "Hello there, snookums."

62. Really. Why ARE we discussing this?
Obama has a habit of calling women sweetie. I bet most of the women he's known in his life find it endearing, otherwise he wouldn't say it.

Regardless, he said it to someone who was apparently so offended she made it into a national story. He called her and apologized, immediately.

Now, one week later, some people at DU are still so distraught by the event they can't leave their homes without worrying that Obama might show up on their street and start screaming "SWEETIE" at them.

This is nothing but manufactured fauxrage meant to cause disruption.

63. Lol who hasn't it happened to? I've heard it from women about 500 times and from men about 50
Who cares? It's not disrespectful. This whole "sweetie-gate" thing is rediculous. F-off already Clinton.

64. It wasn't that long ago that he would have been murdered for that
(black man saying anything to a white woman) so consider how far we've come.

66. Other:
I'm a male who seems to get called sweetie by older waitresses all the time. My wife has even commented on it. I'm a middle-aged fat guy, so it's not like they're flirting with me. It doesn't offend me at all, but I don't quite understand it.

67. Sweetie is a friendly term, no dissing was intended
In New Orleans nearly everybody uses baby, darling, sweetie. It's often used by blacks everywhere. My guess is Obama won't be using it anymore, though.

75. Y'know what? Fuck political correctness...
I've had enough of both Air Fleischer and certain Democrats telling me to "watch what I say." Nuh-uh. I don't seek to ruffle feathers here, but I've done it before and I'll probably do it again if I think a few feathers need ruffling.

77. Just call him "Stud-muffins" back. That will make him think the next time before he does it.
Nothing makes a point of how offensive sexism is like doing something even more offensive back.

85. Not a Senator in a public forum. If a guy called me "Sweetie" in private I wouldn't care.
Edited on Tue May-20-08 11:33 AM by McCamy Taylor
We are talking about a public forum where "Sweetie" is disrespectful. So, you disrespect him back in public, where "stud-muffins" or something similar would make people laugh--at him.

In private, who gives a shit? I call guys "sweetie" and "honey". I'm from the South.

;) We're justiendly like that. We also use the term "honey" a lot too!

Edit: Sweetie and honey are affectionate nicknames used for men, women and children!

86. Being called "sweetie" isn't something I find worth getting upset about.
I've been called sweetie by waitresses, female friends, etc. and I've been called "sweetie" sarcastically by male friends who were trash-talking. Doesn't bother me.
