I think McCain poking fun of the Bible isn't going to play well in the Bible Belt.
Somehow, I don't believe that the Fundies will appreciate the McCain commercial one bit.
As a minister's wife, I find it quite offensive; not for Obama, who didn't create the ad,
but for those who created the ad and stand by it, and call it a joke.

The bible and biblical figures are usually not included as "funny" shit to laugh at.
In fact, you'll rarely see this kind of stuff on SNL or anywhere, really. Not these days.

Watch for this ad to backfire on McCain. It is the cherry on top of this attack week.

Obama will be winning over some Fundie votes with this McCain blooper.

1. I read earlier today where McShame said the ad was just a bit of fun
I guess he disrespects the beliefs of millions of Americans.

How can anyone make a mockery of anyone's faith or lack of faith.

To me, everyone has a right to their own beliefs, whether it be based on a religion or not. That is what this country was founded upon.

2. That was my thought too
Sen Obama should say, "Well, I never would include Moses in a political ad because I take Moses' lessons seriously. I'm sorry to see Sen McCain use the Bible as political fodder."

3. I agree ...

I've already heard from two Southern Baptist acquaintances who are far from the type that would typically question a Republican or even consider a Democrat for their vote, and they are wondering just what McCain was thinking when, in their words, they started doing Obama's campaigning for him by associating him with a person who delivered others from evil.

It's just stupid.

Of course, it's McCain, so I'm being redundant.

5. That's what is making it worse.....the fact that he is blowing off
biblical occurrences as a joke. You can tell those who advise him know nothing much about what the real bible is about.

6. I thought the ad was a dog whistle to the Fundies
Obama is "the chosen one"? There is no way they believe that. They are painting him as a self proclaimed messiah - the anti-Christ. A vote for Obama is a vote for the end of their world.

This whole thing looks insane to us, but to the insane it makes perfect sense.

9. I've read that theory on some other blogs too.
I don't know whether it's plausible or not because I don't understand that kind of religion and can't even make a guess about it.

16. That's my take on it as well
The McCain campaign has mocked "hope" in other ads. As a liberal I'm more offended by that theme than the religious references-and I agree that it's playing on the "Obama is an empty-suit media celebrity" garbage. I hate all of the McCain ads, but the one I hate the most is the stock-footage hippie vs. war "hero" crap. Whenever I see that I can imagine three teens sitting watching TV and saying "Grandma, is that you?". Running against the 60's counter-culture worked for Reagan 20+ years ago and they're still doing it. Pathetic.

8. Isn't odd that I think the ad is anti-semitic.
Moses is the greatest hero of the Jewish people and this ad makes a big joke out of the Exodus from Egypt.

I think this ad really shows that McCain and the people around him have no relationship with, interest in, or respect for religion.

10. Exploiting the bible for political gain.
Just like he did the soldiers.

Nothing is off limits for McCain.

Can we say "He will do or say anything to win."?

Yes We Can.

13. I'm not a believer--but *I* wouldn't have gone there.
Religious imagery is something people do take seriously, and if they feel it's being disrespected, they will have hard feelings regarding the originator of that slight. I think the kind of "Anti-Christ" notion (because they are juxtoposing what the alleged promise of Obama is with the idea he is the opposite, which would be --?) is low--on the cheap, passed-around, right-winger e-mail level. Intelligent people of faith will reject that correlation. Agnostics and atheists like myself will likely suppose McCain is sucking up to some small "low-information", "Obama is a Muslim", hardcore Christian population. Who will possibly be turned off anyway because he wasn't sensitive as to how to speak to them.

But bit by bit, the ad is so debunkable. The quotes taken out of context. The loopiest bit is where I think Obama is riffing on Hillary's sarcastic rant about the Obama epiphany. He was *not* being serious there.

But Moses. Seriously. I loved "The Ten Commandments." I am not religious and I know I don't have much in common with the late Charlton Heston, but I watched that movie every Easter Sunday that ABC ran it for many years. It probably has a lot to do with my love of things Egyptian, but still... Saying Obama is the One could mean he's Neo from the Matrix. And the Obama/Messiah meme is out there, too. But the original figure of leading the people from darkness to light is Moses.

Bush is Rameses. We've been in darkness. McCain comes off like Edward G Robinson, going, "Where is your Moses, now?" Not a good image. Do we want our promised land--you know, America, the land of Promise, to really be promising again? Who will lead us? Not McCain. He is Pharoh's main man. It really is Obama who is talking about leadership. All McCain does is bitch.

The McCain Campaign used a bad, bad meme. I do believe it will backfire.

14. I agree, I once upset a fundy by saying a Mel Brooks joke several times

It was the one where they are at the Last Supper and Mel Brooks is weighting on everyone and he says "Jesus" and Jesus says "Yes" and Mel Brooks says "Nothing......Jesus!!!" and Jesus again says "Yes" and Mel Brooks again says "Nothing.......JESUS!!!" and so on.

Anyway, this fundy lady found my joke tasteless. In other words, the fundy lady wasn't very funny!
