The three stages of a political campaign
Edited on Fri Aug-01-08 11:14 PM by onenote
In October, a political campaign is war.

In September, a political campaign is foreplay.

In August, a political campaign is masturbation.

Keep that in mind as you consider whether its worth getting all bent out of shape about the ads being run by McCain the last week or so. The number of people seeing or paying attention to ads running in late July or August is negligible. People don't give a crap. Now, maybe this year, because of the Olympics, some ads run in the middle of this month might get some play. But expectations are that ratings for the Olympics will be at an all time low.

Sure, its annoying. But its not the end of the world. All that McCain is doing is trying to get some free attention. The more the blogosphere talks about his ads, the more it validates the MSM covering them. We should be laughing at them as a waste of McCain's precious resources. People who have made up their minds aren't going to change them because of those ads and people who haven't made up their minds aren't going to do so in August based on them. They'll make up their minds far closer to election day, after the campaign has played out.

But don't let the corporate media hear you, they think that's all people are eating, thinking and breathing. We just MUST know who the winner of the "veepstakes" is (I can wait til the convention) or that each and every poll somehow spells doom or earth-shattering change. The faux mellodrama only supercedes any discussion of substance cause as Pitchfork Pat Buchanan put it the other day, "if we spent an hour talking about gas prices, we'd have no ratings".

I go one step further. I believe the vast majority really don't start paying attention until the final 10 days...and then it's how they and their pocketbook feel. If things are ok, then they'll vote for "security" or a wedge issue like abortion or gay marriage...but this year, I suspect that many will feel a lighter wallet and know who made that possible. It's gonna suck to be a Repugnican.

Remember, the meida is far from the mainstream...it's run by elites for elites and only cares about its profits and influence. They wish to create mainstream memes, but only to serve their corporate goals.

I laugh about how DU has some of the worst poker players...while I love the verve and energy here, many have a lot to learn about the game of politics.

Cheers...
