So now Bush explicitly EXEMPTS Swift Boat ads from his proposed "ban"?
CRAWFORD, Tex., Aug. 23 - President Bush said on Monday that political advertisements run by a broad swath of independent groups should be stopped, including a television advertisement attacking Senator John Kerry's war record. But the White House quickly moved to insist that Mr. Bush had not meant in any way to single out the advertisement run by veterans opposed to Mr. Kerry.

Mr. Bush put his remarks about the advertisement by the Swift boat group in the context of his previous calls for a ban on advertisements from third-party groups known as 527's, using large, unlimited donations. Only when pressed by reporters whether he specifically meant the commercial from the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, did he say "all of them.''

"I don't think we ought to have 527's,'' Mr. Bush said, referring to independent political groups that are running advertisements on both sides of the political spectrum. "I can't be more plain about it and I wish - I hope my opponents join me in saying - condemning these activities of 527's. I think they are bad for the system.''

His press secretary, Scott McClellan, said Mr. Bush had not intended to single out the Swift boat advertisement as one that should be stopped.

How obvious is it that they're using this to promote the free dissemination of the ad all over the world?

They're shamelessly creating FUD.

5. Sorry to be so disagreeable
but I don't see how that's a flip flop. Once he actually came out with a position he said he wanted all the 527's banned. Just because he doesn't single out a certain 527, I don't see how that's a flip flop. That seems self serving but consistent to me.

6. yeah--he has never said anything different--
it has always been--I condemn them all--all 527's are evil---yadda yadda yadda.

I have never heard him condemn the Swift Boat Liars SPECIFICALY which is what he has been asked to do...

When was the flip flop?

10. Earlier today he specifically mentioned the SB Liars ad
now Shrub is backtracking. And last week, during his earlier vague denunciation of the ads, McClellan first said then retracted that it was specific to the Swift Boats.

Shrub has done everything he can to muddy the waters on his position on this. A lot of people have likely seen one or another headline that says "Shrub denounces ad!" and they think that's the end of it. Then McClellan comes out and ponderously takes the apology away - again and again.

I would say that Shrub is two-stepping all over every possible position on this, except that I am certain Shrub couldn't two-step to save his life.

8. Ban truth ads.
He wants to ban all the ads that tell the truth, but not the one that tells lies.

12. More than a mere flip-flop
Bush's own father and Regan had a hand in making those 527s available and viable.

Through the actions of the earlier republicans they opened a large revolving door that made people like Lush Spinlaugh and Pat Robertson able to spin the truth however they wish to for their purposes by the claim it was an opinion or action of religious or free speech.

In essence the door was opened and the floodgates started.

Since then things have plummeted down a very slippery slope that can truly be directly referred to for why Ru.. Faux... Fox News is allowed to get away with stating things they know or question to be truthful.

Most people are ignorant about these alterations having even existed or having been snuck in through the congress and laws.

Those liars like Limbaugh, O'riely, Rove and Bush are living under a green light of yellow journalism, the likes of which hasn't been seen since the 1950's with the 'red menace' communist scare.

The country is divided and closing on to what may very well become a civil war where our votes barely can be counted and can be altered with the swipe of a magnetic pin in a small silver box with no physical record.

Yet to only prove to be more disgusting is the fact that we as a country even have legalized lying for our 'protection' written into the books that can be traced back to the 30s.

13. Press got it wrong again
I almost forgot the best thing.

If you read reuters or CNN they make it sound like he did denounce this Little Swift boat extension of attack ads. They don't mention that he was caught with one of his campaign advisors in it or anything.

Funny that.

14. Important Talking Point / What short memories we have
"As we approached the enemy, there was a brief exchange of gunfire. I took a grenade in hand, pulled the pin, and tossed it in the direction of the farmhouse. It wasn't a very good pitch (remember, I was used to catching passes, not throwing them). In the darkness, the grenade must have struck a tree and bounced off. It exploded nearby, sending a sliver of metal into my leg -- the sort of injury the Army patched up with Mercurochrome and a Purple Heart." – Bob Dole
