6. He Endorsed Gore In 00
Orlando Sentinel, B2, 8-24-04

"....Monday's Miami Herald reported that Shaq will join a potpourri of politicos and celebs-including the Kerry kids, Al Sharpton, LL Cool J and No Doubt-at the South Florida weekend fund raier."

3. Have you heard of Adonal Foyle?
Edited on Tue Aug-24-04 06:41 AM by lazarus
check out his website, I believe it's http://www.adonalfoyle.com.

He's a very, very progressive athlete. Good guy.

He founded http://www.democracymatters.org/. From his website:

Democracy Matters gives young people a voice in the growing concern over how big money undermines our democracy. We believe that young people with creative energy can make great waves in changing the society in which they find themselves.

I decided to start this organization specifically because I think that there's a sense of hopelessness among young people. And I wanted to show them a way to work to change the system - to fight the system from the inside. So, fighting from the inside, to me, is one of the great virtues of Democracy Matters. By trying to change the way campaigns are financed, you are getting to the root of many problems in our society.

We basically started this organization at Colgate University. After that, it spread to other campuses across the United States. Now, we're at over 50 campuses. Our goal is, basically, to form a grass-roots movement of young people with a desire to deepen democracy by changing the way elections are financed in this country. If we can do that, and if we can restore faith in government for our generation, we will have been successful.

I think it's extremely important to be involved in politics. When you understand how money has completely dominated the political system, you know that most people's voices are silenced. But there is a chance to be heard by becoming politically active with Democracy Matters.

13. Foyle is an interesting character
I used to follow & write about college & high school basketball in the late 80s through mid 90s. Foyle was an excellent student who actually rejected a scholarship offer to Duke in favor of Colgate because, even though Duke is terrific academically, basketball would have been #1 there, while Colgate would allow him to make academics #1.

This is not to say that academics were not important at Duke, but at any big time program, basketball comes first. I doubt Coach K would have let him out of the ACC championship to study for mid-terms...

5. That Tears it
As an Orlando area resident who felt betrayed when Shaq left the Magic to play for the Lakers I'm now going to have to vote for Bush. Plus wasn't he a genie in some movie? Kazzam? That's just wrong.

But maybe I won't let a basketball player control how I vote.

9. He's Really Funny....
The reason I know he "endorsed" Gore is because he told that to Howard Stern as he was being interviewed on his show in 00...

He said he was "digital" not "analog"....

I know the definition of both but I am still trying to figure out what he meant...

15. The NBA is very Dem-leaning
Edited on Tue Aug-24-04 09:54 AM by RatTerrier
Unlike other sports.

Many of them came out strong in the past for Bill Bradley, one of their own.

Commissioner David Stern is a huge Dem.

Michael Jordan has contributed heavily to a few Dems, I believe, including Obama.

16. I Would Suspect Most Pro Atheletes Are Democrats
Because most pro atheletes are African Americans...

I remember when they polled the 84 Miami Dolphins team...

It almost broke down along racial lines between Mondale and Reagan.....

In fact the only white athelete I remembrer saying they would vote for Mondale was Doug Betters... He was a Montana boy I believe and a big environmentalist...
