Schumer urges Obama to hit back harder
One of the Democratic Party's leading electoral street fighters, New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, said that Barack Obama should respond to John McCain's personal attacks with an equally personal slap.

"I would not be afraid to attack back," said Schumer, who chairs the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee, in an interview with Politico.

...

Schumer didn't directly criticize Obama's strategy, but he argued for a higher-velocity response.

"When they say,'He's not one of us,' you don't say, 'Here's our plan on health care,'" he said.

8. Schumer's a "street fighter?"
Could have fooled me. He's okay, but I would never describe him a tough or a fighter, any more than I would describe Tom Daschle as a figher. The Dems are sorely lacking in fighters, but we do have Rahm and he'd kick anyone's ass. I think.

12. How about doing something for the Senate races, for example a video with the list of filibusters
the GOP has done, as the head of the DSCC.

campaign than Politico? If he's got suggestions for Obama, why doesn't he
share them with Obama or Axelrod rather than freaking Ben Smith.

But of course then we wouldn't know how much smarter he is...:eyes:

So far , this is a rerun of Bush v. Dukakis.... with the Dukester ambling around western Massachusetts "looking presidential" while Atwater and Co "defined" him.

Sorry, imo, when McCain attacks, Obama should respond in kind. This stuff about a "new kind of politics" and "staying above negative politics" is patent BS, obvious as such to anyone remotely familiar with American history.

17. I think a "small punch" would do.
Kind of like "it's the economy, stupid!"

He needs to point out that the McCain attacks are lame, and that the Republicans can't fight him on real issues, because they don't have real answers. Or the answers they have haven't worked for the past 8 years.

It's not quite the same as going negative. But I think it would be effective in diffusing the ads and then redirecting the people to the real problems at hand.

18. Yes ! The irony is....
... there is so much to work with. It is such a glaring freaking mismatch .....in terms of intelligence, energy, wisdom, personal appeal AND issues.... that Obama doesn't have to go nuclear to make the point.

But to do *nothing*, or to forgo agressively going after McCain's vulnerabilities.... which are both myriad and mammoth... is a fatal ( I hope not but I think so) error. Especially since McCain's the one on the offensive.

Lots of voters need to have the dots connected. Their interests are not especially political and they are moved by soundbites and vague impressions. Republicans have historically been adept at capitalizing on this fact.

Obama's task is to connect the dots.
