Two vets say Swift Boat group misrepresents them

By Andrea Stone
USA Today

Two of John Kerry’s fellow swift boat commanders in Vietnam said Monday that they have been misrepresented by a group of veterans and supporters of President Bush who have attacked Kerry’s war record. The men say they have tried unsuccessfully for two weeks to get the group to change its Web site to reflect their support for Kerry.
Meanwhile, President Bush told reporters at his Texas ranch that Kerry served “admirably” in Vietnam. He called for a halt to all TV ads by outside groups whether they attack Kerry or himself because “they’re bad for the system.”

Bush stopped short of condemning the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth or its claims that Kerry lied about his war record in Vietnam. The group is funded by “soft money” that is not regulated under campaign-finance laws. In calling for an end to the attack ads by outside groups, the president said, “That means that (Swift Boat Veterans) ad and every other ad.”

Democrats say Swift Boat Veterans for Truth is a front group for the president’s campaign. The group and the Bush campaign say it is acting independently.

1. They need to file a lawsuit right now, before the website is changed
Someone on Kerry's side needs to get to these two guys and help them file a lawsuit right now. A change in a page on the web won't make the news - a lawsuit against the Swift Liars will.

Someone on our side needs to reach these guys right away!

2. OUTSTANDING!!
Getting published in the Navy Times will reach a LOT of retired Navy guys that may have been unduly influenced by the lying Bushvets.

3. The Navy Times has had some remarkable stories this year
They printed some stuff that was very critical of the Bush administration earlier this year, along with the other service papers.

4. So did the Army Times...

Editorial
Nothing but lip service

In recent months, President Bush and the Republican-controlled Congress have missed no opportunity to heap richly deserved praise on the military. But talk is cheap — and getting cheaper by the day, judging from the nickel-and-dime treatment the troops are getting lately.
For example, the White House griped that various pay-and-benefits incentives added to the 2004 defense budget by Congress are wasteful and unnecessary — including a modest proposal to double the $6,000 gratuity paid to families of troops who die on active duty. This comes at a time when Americans continue to die in Iraq at a rate of about one a day.

Similarly, the administration announced that on Oct. 1 it wants to roll back recent modest increases in monthly imminent-danger pay (from $225 to $150) and family-separation allowance (from $250 to $100) for troops getting shot at in combat zones.

Then there’s military tax relief — or the lack thereof. As Bush and Republican leaders in Congress preach the mantra of tax cuts, they can’t seem to find time to make progress on minor tax provisions that would be a boon to military homeowners, reservists who travel long distances for training and parents deployed to combat zones, among others.

8. There were other articles
from the military papers that skewered Bush

I am glad to see the GOP's claim that the military and veterans back them is ringing hollower and hollower

9. get the vets voice out. the ones that supported kerry
speaking out 35 years ago, and the ones today with medals listening to kerry being vilified.

those vets yelling and shakey voices in emotion saying kerry hurt them so, if they hear enough of their fellows standing up and speaking out for kerry i swear, will help heal them, own what happened there and allow them to let go, support kerry or not, i think it will be so healing for some

a voice for vets.............in honesty, not lie

12. My dad was a lifelong Republican
he as decorated in the Navy as any of the swifties were, and was furious about what these scum did to Mc Cain, and Max Cleland, and expected them to go after Kerry before he died, and was furious about that.
