Cokie Roberts ‘I know Hawaii is a state, but…’
Stephen Hess, a presidential historian with the Brookings Institution, noted the other day, “Anybody who picks on for going to Hawaii is really looking for something to pick on.”

Dr. Hess, meet ABC News’ Cokie Roberts.

“I know Hawaii is a state, but …” Roberts said, before recommending Myrtle Beach, S.C., as a preferable vacation locale.

Lest anyone think Roberts accidentally shared a foolish, stray thought with a national television audience, she repeated the criticism on NPR this morning, saying Obama’s decision to vacation with his family is “a little rough,” and Hawaii is a “somewhat odd place.” She added that the locale “makes him seem a little bit more exotic than perhaps he would want to come across as at this stage in the presidential campaign.”

It’s hard to overstate how unusually dumb this is.

30. And if I am not mistaken his Grandmother still lives in Hawaii...
Of course our media can't help creating a false controversy, and if they actually informed the audience that he was going to visit his Grandmother it would be more difficult to call him an "elitist". It is a sad day when this crap is considered to be journalism.

Hawaii Senator Daniel Akaka's office, in response to ABC's Cokie Robert's repeated suggestion that Hawaii was somehow a "foreign" un-American place for Obama to visit:

"Saying our 50th state is somehow 'foreign,' does a great disservice to the hard working, patriotic Americans who call Hawaii home. For months people have been asking me, 'when is Sen. Obama going to come home?' I'm so glad he found time to visit his sister and his grandmother, show his daughters more of his home state, and relax a little. Hawaii is a great U.S. destination, just ask the 5.5 million Americans who visited last year for business and pleasure."

Interesting bit of trivia (which I *think* is still current): Hawaii is supposedly the only US state with a non-white majority.

Suggesting that Hawaii is 'foreign' or 'exotic' is very close to saying it's not quite normal because it's full of brown-skinned people. Is that what Cokie is really thinking? Hmmm?

ain't the stuff of dream vacations and honeymoons. The place is so gorgeous, from what I've seen, would love to go in person some day. Not to mention didn't Obama spend some time growing up there?

I've never liked Cokie Roberts. She's always been a schill for the wingers. This angle is as tenuous as all the others McCorpse's campaign has come up with.

I give it a "0" for substance, a "2" for originality and a "10" for lameness.

Next!

COKIE ROBERTS & HAWAII'S EXOTICISM

Cokie's twice-repeated comment about Obama's vacation in Hawaii is baffling unless one believes that Ms. Roberts is taking her cues from the McCain campaign.

Regardless, it remains a remarkably asinine slur on Senator Obama, who was born and raised there and whose grandmother and sister still live there, and a slur on an entire state full of American citizens.

My plan, from the day I turned 18, was to work my ass off and then move to Hawaii and retire in Hawaii and to even die in Hawaii. If you got to go, why not go where the sandy shores are, know what I mean?

I can't think of anyplace in the world other than Hawaii to live that has been described as "paradise" so many times by celebrities that have visited Hawaii.

My gawd, look at all the movies that Elvis, and a whole bunch of others, have made about Hawaii.

Hawaii 5-0 was a really popular tv show with Jack Lord in the 60s.
Connie Stevens became really popular when she starred in a detective show based in Hawaii called "Hawaiian Eye" in the late 50s and early 60s.

I can't believe that Cokie said this.
It's not like Obama went to China or sumpthin.
Now, China, that's an exotic place to go!

And I want to visit there someday, too.

Every elderly retiree I know of has been to one or the other or both at some point. When Americans think "vacation", they seem to automatically think "Hawaii". Except Cokie, that is.

Personally, I have avoided visiting either of these places because of the "tourist trap" aspect, plus I just don't like to do what everyone else does (ornery, I guess). For Kookie Cokie to suggest that a vacation in Hawaii is "exotic" is just plain batshit crazy.

especially since he partly grew up there and still has family there.

if it weren't for the time it takes getting there and back again, we'd definitely go more often. we've been there half a dozen times- we were married on kauai, and we've swam with the manta rays off the big island. i'd definitely prefer it to myrtle beach.
