Senator Obama, You Will Lose My Vote If You Do This
Senator Obama, You Will Lose My Vote If You Do This

Yes, that's what I said. As much as I would prefer Barack Obama to be our next president, over John McCain, I would NOT vote for him if he were to do what this headline, from CNN, suggests.

Former McCain Ally Touted For Obama's VP
(CNN, August 12, 2008)

Yup, that's what I read and after I finished swearing at the screen on my monitor, I decided that if, and it's a big if, if Barack Obama does the foolish thing of picking a republican, any republican, as his vice presidential ruining mate, (that is not a typographical error. It DOES say RUINing Mate, not RUNning mate.) then he will have lost my vote, my wife's vote, and the votes of many people that I know who are planning on voting for him.

I don't care if the republican is Chuck Hagel or any politician with an "R" next to his name, Barack Obama loses my vote, period. END OF STORY

Former Republican congressman, Jim Leach, said this,

"There are a number of impressive potential vice presidential candidates and this is a singular decision for one person, and that is Barack Obama," Leach said. "But personally I'd be hopeful in the list of serious candidates to be considered would be Chuck Hagel, whether it be for the veep position or a serious position in an Obama administration."

Of course the former Republican congressman would like that. Aside from his stance on the Iraq War, Hagel is a hard core, right wing politician. He would, eventually, be the biggest thorn in Obama's side.

Hagel, in an Obama administration would make Dick Cheney look like our greatest VP since John Adams, in 1789-97.

There are countless numbers of potential Democratic candidates for the VP slot on the ticket. Even Hillary, at this stage, has more to offer than Hagel.

If Obama thinks that having a two party ticket would unite the country, he is very, very wrong.

In fact, I can't see the DNC even allowing this to happen, and if they did, then not only would I not vote for Obama, I would disavow any association that I have with the Democratic Party, as a whole.

There is a time for bi-partisanship. This is NOT the time.

6. And the biggest reason it won't happen is because Hagel doesn't want to be a paper pusher.
He knows he would have no power in an Obama administration as VP, certainly no input on domestic policy.

Why would he waste his time?

7. I think he'd have a hard time getting the nomination
w/o a floor fight.

That is a bit of a stretch, don't ya think?

8. I'm sorry, but threats such as yours have not room here at DU
not only is your headline inflammatory and not required, it is based on nothings.

Threats that one won't vote for Obama "IF" should be interpreted as an automatic request to be TSed, IMO.

9. Hagel has released a statement saying he will endorse NEITHER candidate.
Edited on Tue Aug-12-08 08:28 PM by gateley
If he were dancing with Obama, I''m sure he'd be endorsing him.

Regardless of Hagel's statement, it wouldn't have happened anyway. Don't let the idea upset you.

EDIT: Here's a snip and link:

Hagel, who is retiring from the Senate, traveled with Obama on his recent trip to Iraq, and he has not endorsed either Obama or Republican colleague John McCain in the race. Jordan Stark, Hagel’s spokesman, made it clear that it’s going to stay that way.

11. With the election rules regarding party registration of a candidate, I really doubt
that even having the ability to select Hagel as VP of the Democratic ticket is possible. Someone more well-versed in this can correct me but I believe that candidates on a party ticket need to actually be registered in the party for a certain amount of time. Perhaps with the way the electoral college was originally set up, it would have been possible but not anymore.

13. I tend to get the giggles
every time there's a suggestion of a other party VP nominee. It happened in 04. It's happened this year. It's silly and stupid. Anyone who is actually involved in party politics understands that that WOULD NEVER HAPPEN. Party politics are powerful. You live and die by your party. You don't cross lines. Well, okay, if you're in a legislature, you might to vote on something, but you never, ever forget your party affiliation. Even those we accuse of pandering to the Other Party never forget who they came to the dance with.

Obama will not choose a Republican for his VP.

McCain will not choose a Democrat for his VP.

Got that?

19. For TWriterD
Low Poster? You dont know me at all, do you?

That comment was totally uncalled for and I take offense to it and expect a public apology.

You won't find a fighter stronger than I am as far as backing and supporting, and working for the Democratic candidates of the past two elections so get off your "better than thought" attitude, and you haven't got a clue as to whether, or not, or even how much, I may have donated to the Obama campaign and other things that I have done.

And with that, I will end this conversation, with this, just who the hell are you to be critical of anyone, especially one that you have no idea who he/she may be or what he/she may or may not have done.

A comment like the one you made is expected from a 12 year old. Are you?

I happen to be 69, a Nam vet and former police officer. What's your claim to fame?

22. Yup, very qualified
However, its not so much telling the presumed nominee what to do, its more like telling him what I will do.

You were able to grasp that, weren't you?

Oh, BTW, I am not alone.

And, for the record, I don't recall saying that I don't think it WILL happen, for several reasons, but seeing as there is press about it, it's worth discussion.

There are many reasons why it, IMO, won't happen, some of them mentioned in this thread, but the one that was not mentioned is the fact that he would be the President of the Senate, and would be the one to break ties if that happens, and that, over and beyond almost everything else is a critical issue.

Not to mention, worst case scenario, something happens that requires him to ascend to the presidency, totally unacceptable.

23. If I criticize your post will I be requird to apologize too?
This forum has seen enough of these kind of comments. You're making forceful statements about something that has only a remote chance of happening, and you're just being argumentative when others respond. Refusing to vote for Obama if this or that happens is foolishness. What do you think a McCain administration would be like???
There will be no apology and I'm pleased to make you the first person I put on ignore.

21. And BTW TWriterD
What the hell has "low posts" got to do with it? Just cause you, allegedly, have over 1,000 posts, what the hell does that make you, someone with too much time on his/her hands?

For the record, I am extremely active in several other forums, and quite frankly, somewhat better than the way this one is laid out, but I am here to do my part. I have upwards of 20,000 posts, combined, on 2 other forums. That makes me no better than the person that may have but one.

Somehow you think that quality makes you better but let me tell you this, its quality, not quantity, that counts. And, thats not just in post count, either.

So, I await your apology for your comment, and then we can move on from there.
