Oprah to join Obama for Democratic Party crowning

WASHINGTON (AFP) — America's talk show diva Oprah Winfrey will join Barack Obama to watch as he is crowned the Democratic Party's presidential candidate, her office confirmed Thursday.

Obama will give his acceptance speech before a crowd of about 75,000 people at the Invesco field football stadium in Denver in a break with tradition which is likely to prove a spectacular climax to the four-day party convention.

"She will be there," a spokeswoman for her publicist told AFP, without giving further details.

A close friend, Gayle King, also told the television program Entertainment Tonight that the 54-year-old high priestess would join Obama for the final night, but would not address the crowds.

Winfrey is one of the nation's most influential women, and her endorsement of Obama may give him a significant edge in November's presidential elections among women and black voters in key election states.

4. I wish they wouldn't refer to it as a "crowning"
or Oprah as a high priestess. It really diminishes from the tone.

Of course, I don't know if this is true, or what role she will play. But if we want to stay away from the claims that Obama is a "celebrity" candidate only, this sort of spectacle is not helpful.

15. Another Con's kid book hitting the book store....if you are sick of the media, don't read this
Play of the Day: Meghan McCain's bio for kids
(From politics...yahoo)
ASPEN, Colo. - Add another book to the pile from this year's presidential campaign, although this one is an especially quick and easy read.

"My Dad, John McCain," by the Republican candidate's 23-year-old daughter Meghan, is heavily illustrated and aimed at readers aged 5 to 10. Coming to bookstores soon from publisher Aladdin, it understandably portrays McCain in heroic terms.

Recounting his refusal to be released from a North Vietnamese prison ahead of his fellow captives, Meghan writes, "I think only a great man would have made that choice."

When he returned from the war, she writes, "my dad met and married my mom, Cindy." She notes the birth of herself and her two brothers, and the adoption of her sister Bridget, but does not mention McCain's first marriage or the daughter it produced.

In what is surely a safe bet, the book projects into the future: "In September 2008, the Republican Party had a big meeting, the Republican National Convention. And on that day, my dad was officially chosen as the Republican candidate for president of the United States."

8. We are a monolith not a Monarchy
Perhaps it is induced flashbacks or the chantix, but I'm picturing a golden crown being
gently place upon him while Glenda tells Dorothy the best start is at the beginning.

11. Why should she stay home?
I'm amazed at the things that cause so much offense.

So what they call him a celebrity. Fight back instead of retreating. McCain is a bigger celebrity but it seems like our side is afraid to say that.

I wish we would learn how to fight.

13. But Oprah is not a voice for the Democratic party
she doesn't even pretend to be. This is a partisan event. If she wants to commit as a Democrat, fine, let her be there. Otherwise, this is a celebration for the party.

14. No one is THE VOICE of the Demoocratic Party
This is a celebration for anyone who is supporting the Democrat for the Presidency. She doesn't have to commit just to go. That's a crazy litmus test.

A friend of mine is a Conservative who now supports Obama. He is also a delegate from his state.

Should he be banned also?

16. I didn't say 'THE' voice. But she has stated that she is not a member of either party
which probably helps advance her career, but I just don't see how it gives her an in to the conventin.

If your friend is a delegate for Obama, then I would consider your friend a Democrat.

Of course, your friend is likely very nice, and I don't like Oprah. The last thing I want to see is her at the convention. If she was someone who'd been stumping for Democrats for years, I'd feel differently, I'm sure.

18. My friend is an Independent
He will never declare a party affiliation either. This convention is not just for Democrats but for those supporting the nominee.

I believe if it came down to it Obama would prefer her there considering the fact that she supported him from the beginning.

I couldn't care less if she were there. I don't understand how this creates such an offense with some of you.
