Why are people freaking out?
Obama did a great job, and McCain gave a bunch of phony, canned answers meant to rile up the crowd. All that did was get a rise out of people that were already supporting him. Any independent observer still on the fence could see right through that.

The guy is a dipshit and a sleek, temperamental politician. The independent callers after the forum were trashing him.

Obama did very well in a potentially hostile situation. People just like to hyperventilate.

...and we're worried how it could look to someone seeing it out of context, which is how most news stories are presented these days.

10. No.
McCain certainly isn't going to win any more evangelicals than Bush. Yet the more he panders to them, the more he turns off moderates and makes himself look like another Bush.

As far as I'm concerned, he can go right ahead with this strategy. He made plenty of surprising statements tonight that no independent would be fond of.

11. Some people just need to run around screaming...

I am surprised McCain went into so many stump speech segments, frankly. Every one of those people in the audience, and any potential Obamacans, likely heard a lot of those lines in the primary and knew it was a canned response. I think that will resonate (in Obama's favor) with a lot of people.

16. Some Pespective - Obama Just Went Into The GOP's Backyard and Did Fine
What if I told you that Obama was about to go into one of the most Republican cities, in one of the most Republican counties in the State of California? Wait, before you answer, I also tell you that he will be asked questions by an Evangelical pastor in front of his congregation?

Well, Obama just did that, and he came out of it with Rick Warren calling Obama a friend and vouching for the fact that Obama is a Christian, and this alone probably made the whole trip worth it.

http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/polisubs_0100.pdf

County of Orange:
Republicans: 596,475
Democrat: 384,983

City of Lake Forest:
Republicans: 15,776
Democrats: 7,758

So, Republicans probably outnumbered Democrats by at least two to one, since we are not even talking just Lake Forest. We are talking an Evangelical Church in the City of Lake Forest.

19. MSM Spin Will Kill His Performance
just after it ended MSNBC talking heads all agreed McCain had his best night EVER.

Obama never had a chance to please this crowd, they didn't like him and still don't. - this preacher is supposedly different - his flock, same old brainwashed fundies who only care about 3-4 issues.

21. I agree, Obama did a great job.
And even if McCain knew the questions in advance (or even if they both did--whatever), he still was inconsistent, ran out of energy 15 minutes into it, was repetitive, and boring.

Imagine if he was truly having to answer on the spot!

35. McCain won the night (which was a given), but Obama did himself some good.
Bravo, Obama! He did what he needed to do....put to rest any fears among the evangelicals that Obama is the anti-christ, someone to be feared,.....and maybe, just maybe, someone to run to the polls to vote against in November.

He was never going to win over an audience of Republican evangelicals, but I think he may have put to rest enough of their fears that they may not run to the polls in November to vote against him. Good job. (And, BTW, his answers seemed to be truthful, and not just a show.)

23. I didn't watch, but I've got to wonder how the Obama camp
allowed their candidate to be roped into the corner. Why didn't they insist that the candidates be on stage together? Why allow McCain to go last? When your candidate is leading, you dictate terms or you don't go.

28. Obama is a Christian and not a Secret Muslim
Edited on Sun Aug-17-08 01:04 AM by Jake3463
was the point. They have nice videos of Obama talking about his faith with a prominent Christian Pastor.

The fact that this was scheduled during the Olympics on a Saturday Night a week before the VP announcement and 10 days before the convention was dictating our terms. If the pastor had his way he would have picked another time I'm pretty sure for the max exposure of his church and himself (he sells books)

McCain won the coin toss so he went last.

McCain and Obama on a stage together in front of a crowd of Fundies would not have been a good thing.

31. Roped into the corner?
See, this is exactly what I am talking about. I think the forum worked out great for Obama.

I don't think team Obama really thinks they are going to win this election by flipping evangelicals. What they can do, however, is force McCain to play defense in this area, which turns off moderates. This is exactly what happened tonight.

Obama wins.

30. Because most Americans choose to stay home on a Saturday night...
And watch a political discussion instead of pre-season football and/or a historic Olympic night.

Oh yeah, and that same majority of Americans who choose a political discussion over drinks and sports also refuse to think.

39. I should have added the sarcasm smilie, perhaps?
It seemed to me that the uproar tonight was the assumption that a lot of low-information voters tuned into the Faith Forum instead of the blockbuster sporting events that happened last night.

I think that's pretty unlikely. The people who don't think much about politics and religion (i.e. the people who would buy into the BS that McCain was selling last night), were most definitely NOT watching in large numbers.

That was the convoluted point I was trying to make. ;)
