Did the Obama Campaign Get Snookered Tonight?
Edited on Sat Aug-16-08 10:50 PM by Impedimentus
1. It seems highly likely that McCain knew the questions before hand. His answers were way too quick and too canned.

2. If McCain did cheat, Obama’s campaign can never say so because it would look like sour grapes.

3. No level playing field here. Warren repeatedly cut off Obama while allowing McCain to spiel his blather and propaganda. Often Warren seemed like he was encouraging it? McCain, not Warren, controlled the dialogue.

4. As a member in another thread said, “grandpa is telling war stories again”. Sadly, these stories worked with tonight’s crowd, and the MSM will have a field day chattering for the next week about McCain’s “win”, how decisive and quick he was, while Obama was too thoughtful and too intellectual. The Repub manure machine will spread this stuff everywhere.

5. Yes, Obama came off great, as he usually does, to the choir, but the choir isn't the audience he needs to appeal to right now. This “Warren forum” gave McCain a lot of (the appearance of) positive exposure.

6. Did the Obama campaign really think it would get a fair shake in tonight's environment?

Sure hope the Obama campaign smartens up and finally realizes that these people don’t play fair; never, ever, ever.

We are going to be in deep dung and the country in real trouble if Obama’s campaign doesn’t go on the offensive in a big way, and stop believing that it will get a fair deal in enemy territory. Nice guys and nice candidates too often finish second in this country :( . I sure hope I’m wrong.

Time to get back to selling on eBay so I can make $5M and become a real American.

with people who knew what to say on all the hot button issues. Say one liners and tell jokes, they will applaud anything as long as it fits their agenda.

39. Yes I do
The depth of McCain is as shallow as the river he drifts in and only dead fish swim with the stream.
There is a major change with the conciseness of America happening
realizing that the past ways of thinking will not solve the problems we have

The OP is wrong.

3. I think Barack did fine tonight. He was the thoughtful one. The one
who appeared to answer the questions honestly. McNuts seemed canned and tense to me. You have to remember, Barack is never going to get the majority of the fundy vote. Even HE knows that! If he can just peel off some, or get some to lose or never get enthusiasm for McNuts, he's ahead in this game.

I know people hate it when I call it a game, but it really is a game. A very deadly game of life or death of our Country!

Why the negative on Obama? Why seed the idea that Obama is perhaps a loser idiot, which he would have to be to have been "snookered".

15. I don't think the campaign was snookered
They took a calculated risk. This was not Obama's crowd but he does realize he needs to at least peel off some of these voters. He got some applause and a standing O. I honestly think that maybe Obama will have gotten some independents tonight and maybe some undecided voters. McCain on the other hand may have turned off some of his independent voters and undecideds if they were paying attention. jmo.

19. If he's going to be inviting grilling by the religious, he'd better be better prepared
Let's face it: this forum NEVER would have happened if he hadn't wanted it, and he could have ducked it easily with no consequences whatsoever. He either thinks it's necessary to fight in the religious arena (which I don't) or he thought he could outsmart them.

The very idea of not having a glib response to the abortion issue standing by is amateurish.

It's not like this shouldn't have been expected.

People crave simplicity, and nowhere moreso than in the religious world. Why is this not obvious?

20. I didn't watch it,
but let's remember, not everyone who is religious attends one of these evangelical churches. There are still a lot of normal church going people who disagree with that sort of stuff. I know a lot of Methodists who have Obama stickers on their bumpers. Don't automatically assume that everyone who attends church is a right-wing Republican.

This was a great forum that showed people the real Obama instead of the wingnut characatures. Assuming you aren't just a concern troll, you need to take a pill for that paranoia.

30. this was McCain's audience and Obama made definite inroads
McCain has to hold all the Evangelicals just to have a shot.
He was going full-on fundie to shore up his support with the far-right.

Obama only needs a small percentage to crossover and he will be unstoppable.
He was talking to the moderate Christians his message will resonate.

Wait and see...

I think Obama's thoughtfulness, humility, and willingness to see other viewpoints will be viewed well by some--emphasis on some--of the fundies. But if he's able to peel off even 10% he's doing well.

Those who loved McCain wouldn't have voted for Obama anyway. The contrast was striking and it was great to hear and see Obama ponder questions and answer them thoughtfully instead of shouting out glib little responses.

42. It's a wake up call to Obama to stop being like Bambi.
He has to sharpen his answers. When he's asked a question, he has to learn to give a direct answer, and THEN follow with all his nuance, instead of meandering around for two minutes and then giving some conclusion that may be lost on the audience.

44. No. The Obama campaign played this one right, and Obama did very well. As I expected.

To be sure, the audience was the most difficult for a Dem, but that was a "given", a "known". Nevertheless, Obama punched a small hole in a wall -- and I think it'll make a difference in the coming months before the GE.
