The biggest piece of MSM/Repuke propaganda: Obama should be blowing McCain
away. It shouldn't even be close. Blah, blah, blah.

What's amazing is that Obama is doing as well as he is.

Americans are completely conditioned to vote for men in the traditional presidential mold. And if you don't recognize how powerful that history and that conditioning is, you're oblivious to the reality of it.

And the MSM/Repuke day in and day out bullshit about how Obama should be floating to the Presidency but McCain is making inroads is designed to undermine the fact that Obama is doing so well.

It's sad to see DUers falling for this shit.

2. People for whom his color is an issue aren't going to vote for a Dem anyway.
He's going for the Independents - hence some of his statements since gaining the nomination.

I do not understand - given the country's hatred of GWB and the war, and the economy - why he isn't polling better right now.

It's a legitimate question and not just Republican propaganda.

I think he'll win, but to get a decent majority on the Hill, we need to win BIG.

It's not just about the R's: Republicans and race.

I think for a lot of baby boomers, he's the first president they'll vote for that is younger than they are. That's a real hurdle for a lot of people. People also associate Chicago politics with corruption and gangsters. Remember their rep - Dan Rostenkowski - was sent to jail. He hasn't had the 'daddy' job of governor or executive of any kind. There are a lot of factors in play.

4. if you think my post was about race, you misread it
and if you don't think the weight of hundreds of years of history and precedence don't have a huge psychological impact, well, you're just wrong.

5. That he is not white is important, but there are a lot of other factors.
I have seen many black men in positions of authority in politics and the military. That's not a big deal in my world. I voted for Doug Wilder and was thrilled to do so on many levels.

But Obama has punched a lot of the right cards: he's a penis-American, he's tall, he went to a private high school, Ivy-League college, Ivy League law school.

I think the lack of executive experience - and the negative associations with Chicago - Daley, Capone, Farrakhan, Rostenkowski - also affect perceptions of him. And he looks really young in the campaign lit.

But people for whom race is an issue, they aren't going to vote for him anyway.

Prejudice is certaintly out there, I'm not saying that. But those folks are lost already.

the most overarching one.

that's certainly very important, but it's not issue-oriented substantive--only a horserace talking point. I'm not diminishing the impact of the horserace aspect, because that IS by far the most important area of the race, AFA as big media is concerned

I think the most important part of the phony narrative, repeated endlessly, is that of McCain, the honorable, truth-telling maverick.

the SLIGHTEST scrutiny of that canard shatters that myth into a thousand pieces, and the M$M will cover that as closely as they did BUsh AWOL, or Bush Harken, or Funeralgate...IOW, not at all

it's up to the dems to HAMMER this home. all they have to do is start using the video record of McCain's innumerable lies, distortions, contradictions. if they do that, and Obama's surrogates INSIST on bringing it up at every opportunity, which they almost NEVER do (!!!!!!), they will lose

pugs ALWAYS make the campaign about dem character, and lie lie lie in order to destroy their opponent, with slavish cooperation from their media handmaidens. if dems don't turn this one around, given the vast resources McCain's own recorded words give them, they deserve to lose

if I were running the campaign, all I'd do would be to run ads centered around this sort of precept:
