Do DUers have what it takes to be involved in presidential politics?
There are so many cowards and panic artists in these forums these days who get scared at the sight of a single tied poll.

What is up with that?

2. Eh, some are drama junkies; that's all.
What gets me is how eagerly so many people here gobble up whatever propaganda the corporate media are dishing out. (Like the PUMA thing, which is a media creation but has come to assume vast and fearsome proportions among the more dramatically inclined here.)

4. What people say online and what they do and say in real life
can sometimes be quite different. Not always, but sometimes.

I like message boards and the like, but it feels like a better use of my time to get out there and really make things happen (register new voters, canvass, etc).

5. Um, 8 years of Bush?
Edited on Sun Aug-17-08 02:26 PM by liberalmuse
After having seen the USSC decide Bush got to be president in 2000, and since then, seen everything I believed in about America and Americans absolutely crushed (America isn't free, Americans, for the most part, are apathetic and not very intelligent as a collective), it's understandable that people like myself would be a bit jumpy at the polls right now.

After the debacle of 2000, I decided to do something, as did others. After all, I had heard all my life that 1 person could make a difference. So I protested the USSC decision in the march in May 2001, Wrote letters, faxed and called several Senators and Congress persons, both national and local, begging them not to give Bush a blank check to go to war, marched against the war in every protest, canvassed door to door, worked phone banks and gave what little money I had, going into debt doing it. Then, after all that, seeing our candidates ahead by a few points before the elections and being happy with that, because I just knew we would win, only to see us lose by those same few points after the election, not to mention election theft, I'm a bit wary of the process.

To think after 8 years of this shit that Obama is not ahead by at least 20 points is very disheartening, to say the least. It shows me Americans have not learned, and really don't give a fuck, when what has happened to our Constitution and nation under Bush should scare the living shit out of people enough for them to take to the streets. So yes, I'm just a bit nervous that the polls are tied. I'm a pathetic coward and panic artist, and I'm glad you are noting my concern.

I'm so sick of deluding myself. Marches don't work. They only work if the average American's children are being drafted and are dying. No one really gives a fuck if poor people are being blown up for no goddamned good reason.

Writing letters and phoning Representatives don't work, because they don't give a fuck, either. There's no honor among the lot. Most of them run so they can tweak the system in their favor, and their rich donors favor.

If there is any honor left in America, it probably resides in the sort of people who post here at DU. People who've give a shit so much it's killing them and making them a shell of who they were 8 years ago. People who have given their time outside of posting here to work to save this democratic republic, but unfortunately, it just isn't enough. So go ahead and put the good people here down, if it helps you stay in denial that things are pretty fucked up, and not face the fact that there is a possibility that McCain will be President.

6. Knowing President McCain is a possibility and being a chickenshit about it are two different things
and if you don't have the guts it takes to be involved in politics, then do something else. Bonsai trees are fun, or so I hear.

8. Agree with everything you've written
As I did and thought the same things.

And now I look at Obama and instead of thinking that he could be a great president (like Gore and Kerry), I look at him and think...well, we'll see. If he gets elected...
