The reason why Obama got made fun of as a "celebrity" can be blamed on the MSM too for their increasingly paparazzo-like reporting. Most of the shortlist is comprised of information from "undisclosed sources" which could easily mean "We pulled this from our asses" and their whole announcement of a VP announcement schedule has been equally ridiculous because first it was Wednesday, then Thursday, then Friday and now Saturday. At least, to MSNBC's credit, they've had occasional moments where there's been acknowledgment of the fact that a lot of this VP coverage is just a lot of hot air.
