Poll question: How Would You Like Wesley Clark As Obama's VP?
Edited on Thu Aug-21-08 01:36 PM by Dinger
yes or no, because this poll is not being put up to take away from any of the other potential VP picks. Just would like an idea of how DUers feel about Clark as Obama's VP.

Thanks,

Ding

4. He'd make the GOP wet their pants because he's actually walked the walk before.
He's automatically better than most of the armchair warriors that the GOP has fielded.

26. I think it will happen. Remember, Obama said that everything we
hear until he makes the announcement is WRONG.

Clark is the one rumor we haven't heard.

15. Given the names currently circulating, I'd have to call him my second choice.
Richardson is my first preference, and my prediction for tomorrow's announcement.

But in the unlikely event that I'm wrong (I got the date right already) and the General gets the nod, I'd be fine with it.

He has a war record. He is a bulldog. He would be committed to helping Obama. He is well respected. I believe he would make a great choice.

22. He'd be a great VP
I don't know how good a VP candidate he'd be. He's way too smart and
rational for a lot of right wing voters who would otherwise be thrilled
about his military background.

I like Wes Clark, and respect him even more. He's so smart and has such
a broad range of knowledge, he'd be probably the most well-rounded vice-
president (except Al Gore) since Theodore Roosevelt. But I'm not sure
that Obama is looking only at the qualities of his VP, but also of his VP
CANDIDATE, and that, in this media age, is usually a different kettle of fish
altogether. Bayh holds more in store in that category than many give him
credit for, but I don't see him being as sharp on the attack as we'll need.
Kaine--I have no clue how good he'd be. Biden would fit the bill for sure,
and Sibelius would be a good candidate, but maybe not as good a VP, and
while I though she was a better speaker than some give her credit for, I
have no idea how extensive her knowledge of foreign policy is.

Then again, maybe Obama is playing his cards really close to his chest,
and will surprise us with someone we aren't expecting at all.

If it's not Wes Clark, and since most have written him off, I see him as
a distinct possibility (always surprise 'em pleasantly), I'd surmise it'll be
one of the expected three others: Biden, Hillary or X (the big unexpected).

If it's Biden, he can always smile sweetly at the press and say, "when I said
I'm not your man, what I meant was that I'm Barack's man!"

one to rival John McCain's. And he really really does know how to win wars.

36. Something Else I Like A Lot About Clark, But Don't Mention Much (Don't Know Why)
Is his humble beginnings. He lost his dad when he was four. His mom worked as a secretary (Not much money in that). She always supported her little boy, especially in his education. Wes had a speech impediment, and was put in special education, and the problem was corrected. He is a strong supporter of special education, ond of course, education in general (no pun intended). I am a teacher, and I LOVE that! Anyway, he and his mom (who he calls "his best friend") moved to Arkansas to live with his grandparents. His grandpa worked in lumber mills (n ot much money there either). Wes loved that time in his life. He had many friends in the neighborhood, and while he did not live in the lap of luxury, he didn't consider himself poor. Anyway, Wes Clark knows what it is to work hard and appreciate all you have. Just another reason I'd love him as Obama's VO.

38. There was an Esquire article about him
Edited on Thu Aug-21-08 03:43 PM by Mz Pip
The part about him repelling down a cliff to stay with the dead soldiers until their bodies were picked up is so moving. He didn't have to do this, but he did and that is what true heroism is.

On edit, I tried to link to it but the link didn't work. :-(

39. I Read About It Too, Did Some Digging . . .
It was from the Oxford American (May/June 2003 issue). The link to the article isn't working any more, but you can order back issues, BUT I saved that magazine, and reading your post made me go get it. Here is what it says;

"Early on in the Bosnian mission, Clark had earned Holbrooke's loyalty and respect after a French armored personnel carrier rolled down a mountainside on the way across Mt. Igman to Sarajevo, killing three American diplomats on the negotiating team. Clark and Holbrook had been leading in another vehicle, and when they finally figured out where the carrier was, Clark tied a rope to a tree stump and rappelled down the mountainside to help with the rescue and to recover the dead. According to both men, the tragedy formed a bond between them."
