(An email I just received.)
And what exactly were those “liberal” ideas? The news anchor explained about Sen. Obama’s decision not to go to Wall Street after college and, instead, he did community organizing to help jobless workers. The anchor also gave as another example of Michele Obama leaving a high paying position with a law firm in order to volunteer to mentor young people.
These kinds of decisions constitute a “liberal” agenda! Horrors! The anchor went on to criticize that there was nothing “conservative” about her speech. Well, I appreciate the anchor spelling out what many of us suspected about Republicans all along.
“Liberalism” is actually putting into practice Good Samaritan acts of consideration in loving one’s neighbor as oneself. So Jesus taught “liberalism” in the Parable of the Good Samaritan! This is when he responded to the trick question, “Who is my neighbor (that I am to love as myself)?” His story indicated that such things as providing medical care, transportation, housing and anything else the person might need constituted “loving one’s neighbor” (Luke 10:29-37). And he said he wanted his disciples to “go and do likewise.”
So, Jesus was a liberal by teaching such things, according to this reporter.
Republicans see “conservatism” as upholding a materialistic, selfish and insulated life style that emphasizes maximizing wealth. No wonder they have become primarily the caretakers (Nanny) of the rich, wealthy and powerful. No wonder their preachers preach the gospel of wealth and prosperity. They are saying that they would have gone to Wall Street and stayed with the law firm. Why would anyone want to identify with these laid-off workers and wayward young people? It blows their mind that anyone would choose such a career path.
And I guess the Apostle Paul was also a liberal because he gave up a lucrative career as a young Jewish lawyer in Jerusalem to identify with a religious sect that was “everywhere spoken against” (Acts 28:22). In his new ministry he was given two tasks: (1) to minister to the poor (Gal. 2:10), and (2) to preach to members of an ethnic minority (Acts 22:21). What a pitiful soul Paul was to give his life to such worthless causes!
Republican Pat Buchanan stated that there was nothing “Christian” in her speech. Ah, how wrong Pat was! Her speech was full of Christian principles: emphasis on providing for family (1 Timothy 5:8); engaging in hard work (2 Thess 3:10); using one’s talents for constructive things (Matthew 25:14-30); doing good to all people (Galatians 6:10) and many others.
She also asked for God’s blessings twice, referred to giving thanks to God before meals, and talked about how “grace” had carried her in her life. But Republicans see nothing “Christian” in all this because they have a different view and that is to parade their religion with religious platitudes before men (See the example of the Pharisees in Matthew 6:5-8).
I admonish my Republican friends to examine yourselves and see where this worldly and selfish philosophy has brought you (2 Cor. 5:16,17). You no longer uphold the faith of Jesus Christ and the early disciples. You have corrupted the teachings of Christ and uphold a different form of religion shaped by a materialistic and self-centered political culture.
