The Talking Heads were right. Biden's speech was rough around the edges.
It was not the nice, polished piece of elocution that any of them might have produced. He stumbled on words here and there. He was a lot like an ordinary guy, kinda nervous while talking to the Rotary Club. But I think it was all the more effective because of its imperfections.

Kinda makes ya want to have a beer with him and say "Joe, I know that was hard, but ya done good."

What he had to say was rock-solid, and his little mis-steps were enough to make you open your heart as well as your ears to him.

2. I read/heard that he's not accustomed to using a teleprompter.
And, like many of us old Biden supporters feel, he's at his best when he's off the cuff -- on a tear and passionate about something -- as opposed to being constrained by a script.

He'll get the hang of it, and will soon feel comfortable enough to let more of the real, lay it on the line kick ass Joe come through.

IMO anyway. :7

6. I agree

Even more scripted he was still personal and effective. I actually think it's good when there are scripted elements, but I'm sure he'll mix in more of his off the cuff moments.

9. It's hard to be passionate when you read from a teleprompter
Most of the passionate speeches are without the use of a teleprompter. You lose some of the context of what you are saying when you are just reading words.

3. His speech immediately took me back to my blue-collar roots and made me weep...
So yeah, I would think that this speech played VERY well among the folks who measure their politicians primarily by their character.

One of my faves -- from the heart, about the care that our veterans receive.

This, IMO is classic Biden.

12. I completely agree.
I thought of my father, envisioning him sitting in his recliner watching the speech also. My father spent his entire 41-year career in the white collar world of corporate America, but he's never been far from his blue-collar roots. He was raised in rural Minnesota, a 2nd generation American, the son of a Norwegian farm family. He's an old-school Democrat.

5. It was emotionally effective. Seriously. And that's what was needed. Americans need to connect
emotionally to Obama and Biden.

10. To be very honest about it, I was so caught up in Joe's honesty and the points that he was making
that I paid no real attention to the delivery. For that reason, I think it was the best damn speech I ever heard.

11. When he was more proud of his son
than himself, well what more could a mother ask for. He did great and the fact that the pundits don't know that is what's WRONG with this country.

18. After an intro like that how could anybody give a decent speech?
I mean come on, his dead wife and child, his son, his mother, his wife, his stutter--it was enough to make anybody flub a line or two

19. I thought it was pretty good.
I'm usually pretty tough on our people as far as speechmaking is concerned.

I'm not sure what they're talking about. Yes, you're right... he's not the "elocution lessons" type; but that's one reason why I thought it was good.

The worst I heard today: Tie: Harry Reid and Tom Daschle. They went to the same "Put-out the Fire Academy of Oratory". Must be something about the majority leader's position.

Others: Clinton was better than usual. Kerry was better than usual; not as good as Clinton. Kerry never learned how to use humor to connect with an audience. Too bad, cause he's got lots to communicate.

I miss Ann Richards; and where is Cuomo Sr? They could speak.

Note to convention managers: enough with the friggin' prefab signs already and the little American flag-ettes.
