Tonight the gloomy predictions of the prophets of perpetual gloom and division came to nought. Senator Clinton, in a gesture worthy of the stateswoman that she is, called for a vote by acclamation to name Senator Barack Obama as the Democratic Party’s Nominee for the Presidency of the United States of America. As Speaker Pelosi called for a second to the motion, the Hall erupted as thousands of voices called together as one, first seconding the motion and then uproariously affirming the vote.
And so the journey begun last autumn came to an end. The Democratic Party, famous for its fractious and bitter internecine infighting during the primaries came together and voted as a bloc for united opposition against the last eight years of mismanagement, corruption, usurpation of rights and the general national decay under the Bush Administration. The nay saying of the corporate media, who stood transfixed, carping endlessly and futilely at the sight of a few, isolated and delusional disruptors, were silenced in a moment by the roar of an awakening majority, who after eight long years in the wilderness, see the Promised land in their sights.
Now is the time for change. Now is the time for unity. Now is the time to cry out in one voice to the forces of greed, division and fear “You have come this far, you shall come no further!” On the 20th of January in the coming year, the age of the Neocon will end. If we cannot clap them in irons, we will expel them from the seats of power. We will remove them from our Justice Department, from our regulatory organs and from the agencies that serve us. We the people will reclaim our birthright, dearly bought for us through the blood of uncounted patriots who thought more of their loved ones and countrymen yet unborn, then of their own lives. That birthright is a government for, by and of the people. A government that serves us, takes care of our needs and protects the rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness to all its citizens, not just those who have contributed sizable sums to the party in power.
Mr. Bush, Mr. Cheney, Mr. Rove and Mr. McCain, prepare yourselves. You stand unwittingly upon the volcano of national outrage. Too long have you sat idly by and turned a deaf ear toward the suffering of those you were elected to serve. Your days are numbered, come November we will consign you to the place you so richly deserve, the ash heap of history.
Now is indeed the time. The time to vote. The time to act. The time to rally our people for the great work ahead. It will be long, it will be hard and the fruits of our labors will be long in coming. But we will save our nation. We will save it in the sacred memory of those who have come before. We will save it for ourselves. And we will save it for the sake of our children and grandchildren yet unborn. But we will only save it if we hang together, for as Benjamin Franklin said so many years ago, “If we do not hang together, we will most certainly hang separately.”
