Novakula's Column: Lieberman says no to ticket with McCain
36 minutes ago

Reports of strong support within Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign for independent Democratic Sen. Joseph Lieberman as the Republican candidate for vice president are not a fairy tale. Influential McCain backers, plus McCain himself, would pick the pro-choice liberal from Connecticut if they thought they could get away with it.

But they can't get away with it -- and this has been made clear to McCain by none other than Joe Lieberman himself.

Lieberman surely doesn't know that much about Republican politics, but he has close Republican friends. One of them prevailed on Lieberman to tell McCain that a McCain-Lieberman ticket would be a disaster for all concerned, and especially for the GOP.

~blah, there's more~

2. Jeez....where does he go for his pick?
Ridge?

Joementum?

Pawlenty?

I don't see a lot of appealing candidates there, although all 3 appeal to me

4. So Karl Rove is Lieberman's close friend, eh?
As per another thread...

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x6784676

"Republican strategist Karl Rove called Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.) late last week and urged him to contact Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) to withdraw his name from vice presidential consideration, according to three sources familiar with the conversation."

6. So,McCain is too weak to stand up to republican special interests and pick the VP candidate he wants
I would believe that, except that it requires believing that Joe put the interests of something else above his own.

He doesn't want to go down in the Guiness Book of Records as the guy who crashed & burned in two vice presidential selections for two different parties.

13. But he would go down in the Guiness Book of Records
you don't think he wants to have historical significance, even if it is infamous?
:-)

Besides, I think that Joe thinks that McCain can win. I don't think he's right, but I do think that if he thought McCain didn't have a chance he'd be kissing Barack's ass instead.

I don't have any kind of evidence -- just a tendency to believe the absolute worst about Lieberman -- but I think he'd jump at the chance to be McCain's VP selection. He thinks there is some likelihood McCain will win and he has to realize there is some chance McCain won't finish his first term.

Lieberman won't be the pick (because McCain can't stand up to his party). But I still think he would have taken it.

Lift me up, John McCain! If I cannot have Holy Joe, give me Mittens, then!

This could be in contradiction with the Politico story by Jonathan Martin, claiming Rove called Lieberman personally to ask him to withdraw his name from consideration, for the good of the party he doesn't belong to.

I read that as a set-up, thinking, it's Lieberman, and they're floating a phony story that McCain/Lieberman rebuked Rove's wishes and therefore they are Maverick-y and nobody can accuse them of being Bush.

Thought, well, sounds like it's Lieberman...

15. And he is wrong again. It has been reported that Rove called LIEberman
and asked him, more likely told him to withdraw his name from consideration. LIEberman refused. It's a replay of the Connecticut election when he refused to quit the race even though he lost the democratic primary.

22. Joe apparently never said that he would quit
At least according to an article that another DU'er posted and supposedly confirmed by several sources. Karl isn't used to people saying "No" to him.

Of coures, these days I trust almost nothing of what I read about the election.

27. Gotta tell ya...
The politico article has some more details but what is most encouraging to me is I really believe that Lieberman must be a very serious contender for McSame's VP slot. No reason for Rove to call him and ask/tell him to drop out of the running. It means McCain is not following Rove's plan and Rove is trying to steer the decision outside the will of McCain.

I beg them...BEG THEM....to pick lieberman.

I still say he picks pawlenty.
