I just got punched in the belly by my boyfriend.....(not literally)
Edited on Thu Aug-28-08 07:20 AM by amyrose2712
I was describing to him the feeling that I was experiencing while watching the DNC last night. I told him that I was in tears more then once.
He asked "From happiness?"

To which I replied "happiness, inspiration, hope, I just feel like its different this time"

Then he says "Don't get your hopes up, nothing is going to change. They will still answer to corporations, the rhetoric is the same. Against Russia about Georgia Georgia was slaughtering people, and what about South America and Central America, we need to change or policy there and they won't. What about the execution of the union leaders down there? What will change? They don't like Chavez, why won't they talk to him. We need too"

On all points, I agree, but I still feel that this is a step in the right direction. I still have hope for change in the future. I feel they will make steps towards helping more people here and maybe people's mindsets will turn slowly towards the left. I have to believe that most people have the same core values. They just have to see things in the right light. If we can make any steps towards equality for all I say that is good.

Edited: because people thought I was getting beat up, sorry.

3. We'll never get anywhere unless we try.
And we've made a monumental step forward this week. Let's get those men to the WH and give them a chance to deliver. If they don't, we hold their feet to the fire. Don't forget we need also to hold Congress accountable and make them do the work they were sent there to do. I believe we can do this. Don't get heartsick and discouraged. Get busy. No is the time for us to be the best citizens we can be.

If you can tell the difference between eight years of Bush and eight years of Clinton, you really weren't paying attention.

He will be voting for Obama. But, he doesn't feel that certain policies concerning Latin America will be any better.

No one was saying that there is no difference between the parties. Basically, saying that he wants Socialism now! He is a radical.

13. That is the biggest piece of propaganda the Right uses: essentially "Both Parties Are The Same"
Many people fall for this. But it's simply not true.

To see the truth, look at the history of Democratic Presidencies and Congress. Was that true of Carter? Was it true of Clinton? Kennedy? Sure, these guys made mistakes, but the reality is, we were FAR BETTER OFF with them than we were with Presidents like Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush I or Bush II.

Budget Deficits under Repubs who spend trillions on misdirected defense / Budget Surpluses under Democrats who are somehow able to provide Social programs as well
War after War after War under Repubs who refuse to use Diplomacy / Diplomacy under Democrats that strengthes relationships with our Allies while focusing our enemies on other issues
People dying in poverty and from lack of health care under Repubs / Prospering economies under Democrats where employers are rewarded for providing benefits
Companies subsidized to send jobs overseas under Repubs / Companies rewarded for creating jobs in the U.S. under Democrats

These two parties are not the same when it comes to who they represent: Corporates, the Wealthy and Powerful are represented by the Repubs. The People of the U.S. are represented by Democrats.

It is that simple. Don't believe the RW propaganda.

Edited on Thu Aug-28-08 07:00 AM by tomg
Tigger, others Eyeore. A lot of us go from one to the other in the space of a few minutes. After Obama is in, we will need folks like your friend to keep the whole party's feet to the fire ( no matter how good Obama is, and he is going to be great) because there is always a need for more progress.

But you're right. They should give us a few minutes to feel ecstatic.

16. Your title is hyperbolic, and that's not a good thing.
Edited on Thu Aug-28-08 07:09 AM by TexasObserver
To use a term for domestic violence pejoratively is not a good idea, IMHO, because it suggests the term should be used other than literally. If your boyfriend really punched you in the belly, you should use those words. But if he merely rained on your happiness, it's wrong to say he punched you in the belly. Such exaggeration is self defeating and misuses the problem of physical abuse.

As for your boyfriend, he has another point of view, which he expressed. It's not an unusual point of view, and consistent with the Nader leaning types. His use of words you do not like should never be characterized a punch in your belly. That's just wrong.

22. People who don't get their hopes up don't accomplish anything...
...unless mere rage drives them to destroy. I prefer the New Deal to Madame Guillotine.

So go ahead and hope for something better. Your boyfriend is even allowed to be cynical sometimes--though his timing sure stank in this instance--as long as he gets off his ass at some point to do some good.

23. He does do a lot of good....
He is pessimistic yes, but he is excellent at finding and shoving the facts in Repukes face. Personally, I think he should be blogging. He has great ideas. He quite good at making a person prove themselves wrong. Makes them answer their own questions until they start contradicting themselves. Perfect use of the Socratic Method. I think sometimes he just gets bitter and angry sometimes. He is looking for revolution! And we do need to be angry, but I also still believe in HOPE!

24. Anybody who subscribes to the "both parties are the same" meme is an asshat...

Sorry, hon.

Your boyfriend is an asshat.

His attitude is what created the Nader voters in 2000 that helped put Bush in the White House.

31. Actually, I voted for Nader...sorry
Even thought I thought Gore would actually win.(Which he did) I used to think we needed to vote 3rd party to make a change in the way politics were run. But, I realized thing are way too important now to do that. My mother always voted 3rd party, so thats what I learned. Since I've grown older I know the stakes are too high.

33. Remind him that change, true change, comes in small doses.
Sounds like he want an upheaval over night. That's not going to happen, even if Dennis Kucinich were elected president, with Waxman as VP (just pretending) we would not get a 180 degree turn around.

Change takes time, change takes getting used to, change is uncomfortable for most people.

So no, Obama-Biden will not bring the change he wants, no matter how badly they want it. But its a step in the right direction, and that's all we can get right now.
