63. In fairness, it was old then too.
The speech was given back in early 2006. I have been wondering when, and if, they would bring this out. Seems foolish not to...this will critically wound him if given publicity.

73. Don't take this the wrong way, (not trying to be a smart aleck,
only trying to be quick witted) but his being a POW is old too. I agree with you, things like this should be used to show the real mccain. He is not a funny old man, he is a calloused cold rich man. If they are going to use the POW over and over, I think we should have the right to go back and use anything we want in his senate career that would wound him (no pun meant) and anything the repubs have used against him in campaigns when he ran against bush since he is using Hillary's words against Barack.

99. On his being a POW
I agree...it's getting old.

And you know, lately I've been thinking about how those assholes were wearing bandaids with purple hearts drawn on them in '04 to MOCK the medals John Kerry got.

How completely and utterly nasty and tasteless it was.

It would serve McCain right to be subject to the same type of mocking, but OTOH, I don't know if I could respect the people who would do it.

But yeah....time to retire the POW stuff. He doesn't get sympathy points and being a POW doesn't automatically qualify someone to run a country

103. I agree whole-heartedly
I generally find disrespecting someone's military service out of line. I thought the swift-boating of John Kerry was the most deplorable thing I had seen in politics. BUT, if you're going to bring it up and use it as part of your resume it should be open to critique, particularly when it serves no tangible purpose in proving readiness for the job of President.

I remember the day they pulled him in and constricted his choice of words. This should have been on the top of his list as an example of why we have an illegal immigration problem. He needs to be called on it. And you can believe all that domestic help McCain uses is not strictly legal.

“I loved it. I love mixing it up like that,” McCain said after the speech to a Democratic-leaning crowd of several hundred.

He did seem to enjoy the back and forth that began minutes into his address, when he mentioned campaigning on behalf of California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a fellow Republican. The crowd booed the reference to Schwarzenegger but laughed at McCain’s self-effacing joke that followed.

Yet McCain’s mind was still on the labor activists and their prickly reception.

“I can’t tell you how much fun that was,” he said.

McCain got another laugh when he finished the speech and asked whether anybody had “questions, comments or insults.”

So basically he thinks that Americans wanting a decent wage is a fucking joke??!!! The sadistic shit. So he took great pleasure in poking people who are hurting and are trying to fight for employment so they can support their families??!!!

44. An insult on top of a big lie,
either a big lie or he's totally out of touch. I'll go with a big lie. How could he not know that people don't get paid $50 an hour for picking lettuce? The insult, that Americans are too lazy or incompetent to even pick lettuce, seems (in part) a distraction from this big lie, that immigrants (and I think we're talking about illegal immigrants) are not being being paid less than minimum wage. Oh no, it's because they're doing work that Americans cannot. McCain, you are a liar. Straight lies.

Americans can't pick lettuce? I've been working on my yard, pulling up vines, shoveling dirt, etc. in hot (over 90) and humid weather. That's a lot harder work, and I'm not exactly young.

This guy really pisses me off.

Also, there have to be clips of Romney, Huckabee, etc, saying negative things about McCain during the primaries. Why don't the dems fight back with those clips? Plenty of people work hard jobs in various fields with comparable repetitiveness and difficulty in this country. The difference is those jobs are either Union or pay a ton more. If picking lettuce was a union job that offered over 100k a year, you can be damn sure people would fight for those jobs.

Great rule of thumb assuming normal work week and 2 weeks vacation. :patriot:

This works out to be $100,000 per year. I guarantee a lot of low-wage workers would give up a couple of years of their life to save money and do this.

37. Immigrant farm labor does depress wages...at the behest of globalized American BigAg
But McCain will never make that connection either. Regarding McCain's pointed bet; that's the sort of snippet that feeds the republican position in the long run in that he knew no one would take him up on just grouse about it. The Dem are just as usury but vacuous about what makes the world turn. Nowhere is it alluded to that, for that matter, the heat in Yuma at that time time year is oppressive beyond many people's belief or experience.

Drive an A/C'd SUV or Prius (which was McCain's ultimate stickler to Dems) from Seattle, WA, to Yuma, AZ; fling the door open and you will be knocked down by the heat. So that was more than a safe bet McCain knew no one would take him up on and no one did. But neither do you see his kids out there stooping in 110dg+ heat month after month so there's that.

KOS does good work but this is the variety of faux-fiasco that will not pan out until wee see KOS himself out there in the fields. And I don't see that happening.

I think the focus should be re-directed away from McCain and his flip little bet, and onto American BigAg that contributes to the lowering of wages while increasing levels of health hazard, family disruption, even death for corporate profits that American taxpayers pick up the tab for in higher locale school/education budgets, social & emergency health services BigAg refuses to pay for.

American BigAg are the ones that should be willing to take McCain's flippant bet, to prove to *the rest of us* that they still understand what makes the world go round but no...You'll see them bouncing round sun drenched fields in their tons++ dual'y diesels talking on their cell phones windows rolled up in what I am sure is an A/C'd crew cab.

The fiasco will be ours so long as we allow republicans to control the image.

45. I don't think lettuce is grown in the summer in Arizona,
not from what I'm reading on the web. Sure, people from Washington state would have a hard time in the Arizona sun, but Americans living in the southwest? For $50/hour I think plenty would, but it doesn't pay $50/hour, more like $5/hour and (I'm guessing) without proper safeguards, in part because of illegal immigrant labor. The $50 figure is a big lie. I wonder how the pickers are treated in terms of supply of water, breaks in the shade, etc.

McCain is basically saying that it's morally acceptable to pay illegal immigrants low wages to do horrible work, that it is ok to exploit them because it lowers food prices. However, I think there is a ripple effect in terms of wages, that it depresses our wages in general, not just farm labor wages.

76. You're right. Lettuce is a cool season crop.
As for horrible working conditions, it's true. Farm workers die in the Central Valley in California every year. Fear of La Migra, and a culture that values stoicism, make immigrant workers easy to exploit.

Enforce the labor laws across the board, and the immigration "problem" disappears.

agreed with while for the most part with the horrible little lie that is at the genus of this feeble, small minded John McCain bet: please consider http://ag.arizona.edu/crop/vegetables/cropmgt/az1099.html these last couple days have been mellow by comparison here in the central valley @ 101-102+, 105 tomorrow; it gets very, very hot but even hotter further south were it becomes routinely un-bearable, and requires a level of rugged individuality little found outside the people' willing to perform such tasks i.e. immigrants legal or otherwise...God Bless Them!!

McCain should have been called-on for his flippant disregard for the people that work the fields, in the state, in which, he is a U.S. Senator. Shame on John McCain! For using their disadvantage at the expense of John McCain's personal political fortune!

101. "Harvesting takes place primarily from December through March."
so at least they don't have to deal with summer temperatures. Still, it's hard work and the working conditions are poor. The workers should be treated better and paid better, employers exploit illegal immigrants so they can pay less and treat workers poorly. There needs to be a clamp down on the employers.

I don't think I essentially agree with McCain on this. He's saying "you couldn't do it" as a blanket statement to the American workers he was dissing. It's not that most of them can't do it, for $5 and change/hour many Americans won't do it. For $50/hour (McCain's big lie or total stupidity*) many of these same people could and would, even with the poor working conditions. What did he mean by "you couldn't do it", they they would collapse or die from exhaustion or heat stroke?

* it's hard to tell with McCain, since he's both a liar and stupid.

One of McCain's advisors is a lobbyist for some of the companies that take advantage of illegal immigrants.

102. I know that's right. And maybe the issue isn't even lettuce; that was just the throw-away veggie...
so to speak, that McCain used to drive that point. Still, it gets hot out here. And the fields, vineyards, and orchards brimming with produce are maintained throughout the season. It's 105 here in the central valley today. Down there in Yuma, even with an 'average' Dec/Mar temp of 75dgs +/-, it is still stooping work, repetitive bend & twist. But down there it can get to 110+, and that's hot!

They work those fields and are off gathering other crops. But they've been elsewhere previous in hotter locales too; turning soil, planting, prepping rows, etc, all the incidentals of farming. It's a noteworthy process and farmers (i suppose even BigAgri dudes to a degree, until they serve us salmonella, or e-coli ridden franken-foods) are to be appreciated.

I suppose as well McCain was tapping a generalized republican theme and while I hate to admit it he may have a point; in that you could, for that matter, substitute picking lettuce with drilling for oil i.e. no one, certainly fewer people want to have to stoop to pick their lettuce for a garden variety garden salad, or pay $75 for a small bowl of greens that cost $50/hr to pick; they just want it when they do. Similarly, most don't care to tackle filthy oil derrick rigging, get all oily; or dig coal, pour it into a fossil fired turbine or whatever, to get their electricity; they just want to flip a switch or push a button and have the lights come on. So that it would seem he was casting aspersion onto what they/republicans consider effete positions on what it takes to bring goods & services to market.

McCain says he's a straight talker but I don't believe it. republicans govern by obfuscation, and consider anyone that doesn't support their gibberish to be effete. In that regard...McCain was being true to form as the antithesis of a straight talker

There are many, if not a majority, of Progressives who are FOR amnesty for illegals. One of the arguments used to support this position is that these immigratnts do many jobs that American citizens will not do. Such as picking lettuce. McCain is making the point that this job is so not wanted by American citizens that they will not even do it for a very high wage, $50 an hour...

So he is only echoing what many Progressives have said. So Im not sure of where the "scandal" is in this video...BTW I disagree with McCain on this issue. There are many jobs the illegals are taking that would be gladly done by Americans...Corporatations are explointing the illegals by paying crap wages to line their pockets...This opinion of mine may put me at odds with many Progressives, but I dont form my opinions to please others.

Uh, exactly which "progressives" have said that Americans will not work for fucking FIFTY DOLLARS AN HOUR?

The folks and comments you are talking about are about LOW WAGE EARNERS. Those who don't work for even the minimum wage. They are the ones who deserve amnesty, not anyone making $50 dollars an hour.

Jesus!

58. No, I dont think so..
He is simply saying there are jobs Americans would rather not do. Doenst make them "Lazy"? I make $37/hr in air-conditioned comfort(computer programmer)..would I pick lettuce for $50? Hell No! Does that make me "Lazy"? Nope. Again, I think there ARE Americans who would do the work and McCain is wrong. McCain is actually repeating what many pro-Amnesty (Progressives) have been saying for years!
So I dont think there is much here to waste air-time dollars on unless you want to illustrate his temper.....

74. Welcome to DU...

...actually, what he was saying was that the union guys who were yelling at him from the audience full of union people, union workers from a union that does stuff like work long shifts in incredibly hot weather breathing in fumes and slaving over melted black tar or positioning and attaching large sections of material while perched precariously on a rooftop, were too soft to pick lettuce.

It's no wonder that union endorsed Obama and is working very actively to get Obama elected. It was a huge deal to them.

It's a mistake no seasoned politician could make unless they were so out of touch that they actually believed it.

And it will look real nice right after video of Obama saying McCain "doesn't get it" from tonight's speech.

Of course it won't resonate with the white collar and tech sectors who have little understanding of what physical labor entails. It doesn't need to. Most of them have their heads so far up their ass they are voting Libertarian anyway. That's not the target audience.

(Thank goodness and a bit of help from my rearing that I have enough financial flexibility saved up to get my IT job in institutions that aren't full of those types and don't have to listen to their sophomoric nonsense all day long.)

He's completely out of touch. There's no other explanation for him telling a gathering of union labor that illegal immigrants are here to do work that union workers can't. I remember thinking he had lost his mind when he gave this speech. I can only assume that the strategists for the party have been holding on to some of his many "gaffes" to bring out at more opportune times.

64. Amnesty for Illegals is one issue that splits Right Wingers and
The Progressives..

On the Progressive side, you have folks like me and you who see the negative consequence of illegal immigration per its effect on taking away working American's jobs. But then you get flack from other Progressives who call you xenephobic/racist for opposing amnesty/open borders that will only worsen the situation...Oh well I guess we all cant agree on everything...

86. $50 an hour to pick lettuce?
Yuma's primary harvesting takes place from December to March... lessee that's 16 weeks, or 96 days at 6 days a week. 8 hour day with 1 hour paid for lunch and smoke breaks... (don't ask/don't tell on what I might be smokin...) we arrive at: $38,400!!!! ...subtract the taxes--wait a minute, mCcain wouldn't expect ME to have to pay taxes on that, so darn near $40,000 for 4 months and I don't need to worry about the boat flipping over from too much crab.... Can I bring a friend?

I posted this myself a few days ago:

This was at a 2006 AFL-CIO convention:

Here is the You-Tube Video - John McCain Trashes American Workers :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWOZKeOauNI

Here is the link to a MSNBC Article:

link: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12155322 /

"McCain responded by saying immigrants were taking jobs nobody else wanted. He offered anybody in the crowd $50 an hour to pick lettuce in Arizona.

Shouts of protest rose from the crowd, with some accepting McCain’s job offer.

“I’ll take it!” one man shouted. "

92. Over Two Years Old, unions emailed it out
to their lists at the time and it actually made the mainstream news. But yeah, the more exposure it gets, the better. Obama's background makes him very reluctant to play up anti-immigrant feelings, no matter their basis. He won't use it, but AFL-CIO's Working Families News emails might revive it, if the campaign doesn't forbid it.

How much do you think genetic engineering might have to do with Big Agriculture using Roundup to kill all the weeds? That means Farm Laborers don't have to manually go up and down each row with a hoe weeding and thinning crops. I know this isn't lettuce picking that probably must be done by hand. You know they are modifying the crops so they are resistant to Roundup so they can just spray the weeds right over the top of the crops. Some people are saying that is why there is such an increase in intestinal dysfunction. The weed killer is in our guts killing our flora. Maybe the European Union is right about not letting GM food on the Continent. I used to think they just engineered for bigger heartier plants. No, they go back after spraying as see what weeds survived and then splice those resistant genes into the crop. All so they can sell Roundup. I figure if they are that desperate to force all farmers to use their seeds and their products they would also be behind a lobby to make sure no human beings are needed to hoe beets. Just a thought.
