Back By Popular Demand: John Kerry!

By Greg Sargent - August 28, 2008, 10:07AM

Many of you wrote in last night to say that John Kerry's speech was actually the sleeper hit of last night's festivities -- and many of you wanted a thread for it.

Well, ask and ye shall receive...

(Video: http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/08/back_by_popular_demand_john_ke.php">John Kerry Speaks at the DNC)

Where was this man in 2004?

He was there, see stunt media pulled last night. You Tube and the Blogs will correct media bias.

1. Kerry needs to use these themes on MTP...
...and other interview shows when he's serving as Obama's surrogate.

He usually does pretty great in the surrogate capacity otherwise, but his remarks in the speech, especially against McCain, need to become Obama campaign talking points.

4. He actually already did

He was on FTN a few weeks ago and Scheiffer asked whether McCain had changed or Kerry had just changed his opinion on McCain (lovely question). Kerry responded with a leas polished version of this. First saying that "president wannabe" McCain is very different than the Senator McCain he had known. He then gave some of the same huge 180 degree shifts he did here. It was a great off the cuff answer.

Here they were far more eloquently stated, but the essence was the same. Many other parts were also things he said before - including in his endorsement speech. The difference is that he was able to put them very coherently together into this speech which hits back at so many Republican attacks in addition to attacking McCain.

3. Loved Kerry's Senator vs Candidate lines with "Are You Kidding Me Folks?" astonishment

that a guy with all of these very serious contradictions has been given a pass by the press.

I liked the way he prefaced the stuff with explanation of his being a friend of John's until Senator McCain morphed into Candidate McCain who is so very different.

I was looking forward to Biden making those statements. So it was fun to have another Senator who knows JSM III well doing that instead.

Go Kerry !! Keep it up !!
Let's have some ads on that theme. How much the "maverick" they liked has changed.

And we'll need ads from veterans about John Sidney McCain III's votes on their issues. Some made the point at the convention on how odd it has been to see someone with personal heroism not carry that into supporting legislation that helps other veterans and honors their service.

Kerry could tell that tale, but I like seeing the younger, clean cut veterans talking about it. That is a critical issue. As he parades his experience, how baffling it is that he has voted down veterans' benefits.

Democrats have always been more generous toward veterans benefits because far more Democratic legislators have served in the military. (I looked up the Chickenhawk stuff before the 2004 election and it was striking how many more Dems had served.)

((Edited to clarify "his" to be JSM III in one spot.))

5. Im still a huge Kerry fan from '04. He is a great speaker and can hit the rePubes hard.
Even in this campaign when he speaks to the MSM he is a great surrogate for Obama. He is a great orator for the dems and dem values... Hopefully he ends up in Obamas cabinet some where..

9. Yeah, there is definitely a lot of buzz on the blogs about that speech.
Of course, us long time Kerry supporters knew he had it in him the whole time.
