3. SWEET! The whole convention is there.
I was having trouble understanding how convention business was to be done... I thought maybe they'd be at the convention center then move to the stadium.

But I see it's set up like a convention hall.

Very cool!

Somebody in the campaign likes to make bogus presidential seals & stuff like this. This one is over the top & weird. It's only going over around here because it's Obama's.

Why is Georgia center stage? Virginia and Ohio choice seats? Hmmmmmmmmmm. Swing states?

To be perfectly honest, I think it's a bit overmuch. I mean, talk about UNsubtle.

I get the whole homage thing to the Classical style of architecture common to government buildings. No problem with that.

But I would have far rather seen a simpler, less hubristic backdrop -- like maybe just a screen with the Obama red, white, & blue "sunrise over fields" logo. It's a beautiful visual, an inclusive symbol that incorporates the sense of the breadth of our country.

This architectural set symbolizes the Ruling Class, the elevation of "leaders" to a status removed from the rest of us.

Sorry, as an Obama supporter, I think it largely sucks. It's the wrong message.

35. I was very thrown by it at first, fits the
messiah, chosen one and blah blah too well.

I brought up colums to my son and he immediately assumed that in honor of the "I have a Dream" speech anniversary they wanted to make the background resemble the background from King's speech

Unlike me he didn't assume Obama campaign was being stupid and going for a temple scene. If he is right I assume Obama will make it clear it's in his honor (maybe show part of King's speech too?) because many people are going to have WTF? kind of attitude.

As far as a simpler scene...a screen...I was thinking there are reasons for that. The people who get to be backstage and maybe the secret service wanted a place to do their thing too.

37. When I first heard about it but hadn't seen it yet, my thought was "Columns? Okay, Lincoln Memorial"
But that's not what it looks like, it looks like an exterior view of the White House -- complete with windows.

And it pains me to say it, but that's just really, really stupid -- like that ersatz Presidential Seal they used that one time on a podium that Obama was speaking at.

It's a guaranteed way to piss people off; coming off like you're taking ownership of something you haven't been given yet. I think if I were a wavering voter, taking one look at that set would send me right off the fence to the other side. I'd be thinking, "Oh yeah? We haven't voted yet, Bud. You've got a lot of nerve."

It would be fine if it were a sort of Lincoln Memorial replica, but that's not what it is, that's not what it looks like.

Really bad, stupid move, imho.

29. I dig it. It looks strong and yet it is open. I hope no one has to traverse those stairs.
Maybe they're not going to be used, but are placed there to serve as a visual metaphor of stepping up to lead.
I see chairs surrounding the inner circle in blue, so maybe they will be climbing up and down them.

30. For this the fuss?
This is just so ordinary American Political, typical design. It is in the tradition and all that. Not what I'd pick, but man I expected something really out of step with the usual. This is pretty much the usual look of such sets.
Why the fuss? I'd have gone another way, but it is not anything to stress over.

Of course not, they'd complain even more that he should've made more of an effort.

34. Just so wrong on so many levels. We just ask for it from the republicans.
We just serve it up on a plate. Hot steaming fiascos like this that will get airplay forever.

No wehad to do this, after a fantastic set design at the convention hall we go all traditional/republican on the set design. I would expect this from them, but not us. It sends all the wrong messages. Oh that's right, the average Joe gets it like the New Yorker cover.
