Romney Family Gets Security Sweep
By David M. Drucker

If security sweeps are the giveaway, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney may be on the brink of being selected as Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) vice presidential running mate.

According to sources with strong Michigan ties, the Secret Service has conducted a security sweep of the home of Romney’s sister. Romney was raised in Michigan, where his father served as governor.

However, one campaign operative familiar with the working of a presidential-level campaign cautioned that a sweep of such a location could have been conducted in advance of Romney appearing as a surrogate — not the vice presidential nominee — at an upcoming McCain campaign stop in Michigan.

Any McCain campaign appearance in Michigan would likely include Romney, who remains popular there.

Other sources and some news reports have also suggested that Romney in the last few days might be traveling with a security detail, although exactly who employs this security detail could not be confirmed.

Romney finished first in Michigan’s January GOP presidential primary. McCain finished second in that race.

4. So what does that mean?
I mean it could be a strong signal that he's the VP pick or since it was only a sweep of his sister's home, maybe there was some sort of credible threat. Thoughts?

6. Could be a head-fake, but if so
an expensive one, conducted on the tax-payer's dime. I think it means Mittens is the guy. Which is great news: he's a moron.

8. My thoughts are it could well be Romney
I don't think McSame has much choice. Mc is picking from a poor field, and no matter who he chooses he loses some voters (as someone pointed out in another thread). With the electoral vote map looking as tight as it is, Mc must have Michigan. Perhaps Romney's sole purpose is to help him there.

5. Not the best, or worst pick for McCain.
Of course, he really doesn't have any good options.

Not quite as damaging as I was hoping, but we can work with this.

11. The worst for him politically (and best for us) would have been Lieberman.
That's certainly the pick I've been hoping for: it would've split the GOP base right down the middle, and pissed off the fundies and hard-core wingnuts no end. The best? God--the GOP bench is so shallow I'm not sure that Romney wasn't his best available choice. Maybe Huckabee: that might have fired up the fundies and convinced them to turn out. They'll have to if McCain's going to have a chance.

9. My Fundie Family won't vote for a Mormon
Most fundamentalists believe Mormonism is a bigamist cult.

Good luck getting the south. Turnout's going to be awful.

23. Mine either. I spoke to my mother last night...
... this is the woman who gets all her news and info from Hannity and Colmes & Limbaugh. :eyes:

The most important issue to my parents is whether the candidate is Pro-Life.
She HATES John McCain. HATES. LOATHES. She thinks he's a liar and a panderer.

My cousin went to high school with his daughter, Sydney, years ago in Northern Virginia. She spent time in their home. The stories she has told about things she's seen with her own eyes and stories relayed by Sydney have apparently done the trick in convincing her and my parents that he is completely mentally unstable and not someone you want with access to nuclear weapons.

She said she would have considered holding her nose and voting for him if he selected someone like J.C. Watts, Alan Keyes, or some other fundie whackjob for VP. But she knows he won't and therefore cannot be supported.

I specifically asked her about Romney. For the next 5 minutes all I heard was: Mormonism is a cult. It's evil. It's stupid. It promotes polygamy. It's blasphemous. Anyone who is a Mormon is either stupid, crazy, or tricked. Fundies, by and large, HATE mormons. They are not viewed as fellow fundamentalists. They are as much an enemy as the "libruls".

I tried to talk her into voting for Barack, but she, of course, brought up the right-to-life smears against him. I tried to refute, but was ignored. Hannity is a more reliable source than I am, apparently.

She thinks that Barack will encourage tolerance for Islam, something we must must must not do, for it is a "violent" religion made of blood-thirsty zealots. She believes we should NEVER talk to Iran. She also believes that trickle-down economics is the best thing for our country and we shouldn't punish corporations that profit.

Oh yeah, and she doesn't like Barack going to Berlin. She doesn't want to be a "citizen of the world" just a "citizen of America". When I pointed out that MAYBE we should TRY to restore our standing in the world if we hope to have ANY allies in the next war we instigate, she seemed to relent a bit... overwhelmed by rare feelings of common sense.

I was so frustrated after the conversation, I was LITERALLY red in the face.

She won't vote for Obama, but she won't vote for McCain either. Her plan now is to stay home, which I guess is about the best I could hope for.

17. I an see the ads now.
The dog on roof of car. His "I am a hunter" yet he never had a license in any state, doesn't own a gun, and finally admits to shooting "small game" which turns out to be rats! And don't forget all the arguments he had with McCain in the debates, and the looks they gave each other, priceless!

I wonder who they will use the "elite" crap on Obama with all the millions they have between the two of them?

No matter who he picks he is still in trouble.

21. McCain is going to have a different running mate for each house
The campaign is still trying to determine how many more they will need. Staffers were reported to be interviewing potential veeps in a diner in south Jersey.

22. Romney will do the neocons' bidding. That's number 1 priority, and why he gets the nod.
Whoever is selected has agreed to the neocon power in foreign policy. The rest of the stuff like the social issues is for the rubes that the GOP needs to maintain power.

If Pawlenty has sold his soul, he has a shot. But I doubt if he's trusted as much as Romney, who has demonstrated he will do or say anything to get the nod. Neocons' kind of guy.
