A Humble Request - - Please Call it "Mile High Stadium"?
Edited on Thu Aug-28-08 03:55 PM by DarthDem
I don't mean to be shrill, but please, let's not glorify a halfass "financial services" organization that will probably be out of business or sold within the next year or two (that's consistent with the general track record of companies that engage in corporate shillnaming of stadiums).

Let's call it Mile High Stadium, as people who live in Denver do. :-) Thanks.

5. Thanks!

I would rather have seen a post from someone from Denver than from me, in Philly, but the disgusting practice of corporate shillnaming of sports stadiums is close to my heart. :-) Thanks for the much more important local perspective!

38. Well, here in Philly, we know how to get around those names.
I haven't heard any Eagles fans refer to "Lincoln Financial Field" ("The Link") or Phillies Fans say "Citizen's Bank Park" ("The Park"). If the folks in Denver call it "Mile High," that's what I'll call it, too.

Of course, now a court order bars me from calling it by its real name. :)

Consistently called it Mile High Stadium last night as well, and did so in a mocking way. He obviously hates shillnaming too (and he's a sports guy).

11. The FIELD is named after (sold to)Invesco
the stadium is still Mile High

UVa has a name for the field, the stadium, the locker rooms.... lots of big donors

Univ. of Florida does too (everything is named) either the field or the stadium is named after Katherine Harris's grandfather. $$$$$$

You're right. But when CBS/Faux/NBC/ESPN broadcast an NFL (Broncos) game from there, the commentators and the graphics people use the shillname. And they have to, because the shills who run those networks clearly dictate it. Can't offend the advertisers!

However, Barack Obama doesn't have that issue, and neither do we. 'Sall I'm saying. :-)

14. Absolutely!
I don't like all the damn corporate names for venues, nowadays.

The former names were better,

i.e.

Irvine Meadows- now- Verizon Wireless Amphitheater

The Pond -now- The Honda Center
( where the Ducks play)

Jack Murphy Stadium (in SD.)----now---Qualcomm Stadium,

the list goes on and on!

:(

17. Some Great Examples!

One of the rules of my Anti-Shillname Statute is that if the place once had a non-shillname, then it stays. The Pond (which actually was part of a shillname, but people shortened it) and Jack Murphy are two great examples.

There's been a bit of a reversal of this despicable trend in recent years, too - - Paul Brown Stadium (NFL, Cincinnati); Cleveland Browns Stadium (NFL, Cleveland); Nationals Park (MLB, Washington). I'm hoping it's a sign.

24. That's a Bad Name. People Have Every Right To Reject Attempts To "Brand" Our Civic Heritage
You want to put you name on a building? Donate a hospital or a library wing. Or school building supplies.

Be a part of the community that's responsible for your success.

Invesco has nothing to do with the civic or cultural heritage in Denver, it's just a company looking to get its logo on a building. No one who is not specifically paid to speak the name, "Invesco" has to. If the greater public rejects it, that's their prerogative.

27. Hmm
Invesco is investing in the city and helping to pay for the stadium. The naming rights helps pay for player and personnel salary and other things.

They get to hang their name on the building. They can't force anyone they aren't paying to use their corporate brand name.

as a matter of fact, The Denver Post refused to call it "Invesco Field" for a while, before capitulating, plus Woody Paige has said that Invesco Officials call it "The Diaphram."

20. Phil Gramm's wife, Wendy, sat on the board of directors of Invesco for quite some time
http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Wendy_Lee_Gr...

Wendy Lee Gramm is chairman of the "regulatory studies program" at the Mercatus Center of George Mason University, generally calling for deregulation of the energy industry. She was on Enron's board of directors before its collapse. Enron had been a financial backer of the Mercatus Center.

Previously, Wendy Gramm held several positions in the Reagan Administration, including heading the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, when it exempted from regulation Enron trading in energy derivatives.

She has also previously been head of the Office of Management and Budget's (OMB) 'Information and Regulatory Affairs'. During 2002, the OMB drew up a "hit list" of existing federal environmental regulations it believes should be changed or rescinded. Of these, 44 had been suggested by the Mercatus Center.

Wendy Gramm is married to Senator Phil Gramm.

Gramm also serves as chair of the Texas Public Policy Foundation and a director of the Independent Women's Forum, a conservative women's group. She has sat on the boards of Enron Corporation, Iowa Beef Processors, Invesco Funds, Longitude, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, and State Farm Insurance Companies.

http://www.thenation.com/blogs/campaignmatters/336192

-snip-

After all, things are fine in Phil Gramm's America.

He's got a great pension as a former member of the House and Senate and, because the federal government manages the money, his income's secure from raiding by corporate swindlers. In addition, Gramm has found plenty of work since leaving the Senate as a lobbyist for the firms he once aided as a legislator.

Plus, his wife's bringing in plenty of money.

Wendy Lee Gramm's also a former government employee. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, she was Ronald Reagan and George Bush the Dad's appointed head of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Under her "leadership", the commission exempted Enron from regulation of trading in energy derivatives. Remarkably, after leaving that post, Wendy Lee Gramm took a seat on the Enron Board of Directors.

Enron also supported the Regulatory Studies Program at George Mason University's Mercatus Center, which Wendy Lee Gramm chairs, when she isn't running to the bank to cash the checks she receives as a board member of various investment funds and insurance companies.

So things are working out pretty well for the Gramm family.

They're not whining.
