Bill Clinton to miss Barack Obama's acceptance speech
Bill Clinton to miss Barack Obama's acceptance speech

Bill Clinton will skip Barack Obama's acceptance of the Democratic nomination tomorrow night - a move likely to raise tensions the party has worked hard to soothe at its convention in Denver this week.

The former's president's anticipated absence, first reported by CNN, comes after Hillary Clinton's well-received address to the convention last night in which she urged her nearly 18 million voters to back Obama as loyally as they did her.

Obama will accept the nomination in a speech to a crowd of more than 75,000 at a football stadium.

The former president, who campaigned fiercely for his wife, often to the irritation of the Obama camp and some neutral Democrats, is scheduled to address the convention tonight, speaking on foreign policy.

Terry McAuliffe - the former Democratic party chairman and Hillary Clinton campaign boss, cheerleader and top fundraiser - is also skipping the speech, having told MSNBC television yesterday that he was heading home to be with his children.

26. Exactly. I bet Obama is glad that Clinton won't be there, grabbing some
of the limelight that should be Obama's alone tonight.

Reason and logic has nothing to do with it.

And just to make the point:

Are you kidding? They'd be criticized for attention seeking. As it is,
they appeared on two different nights of the 4 day convention. (And attended 3 nights.) That's PLENTY.

32. Constant camera-cutting to him
followed by post-speech "expert" analysis of his body language and facial expressions. Which conclude of course that Bill "isn't fully behind" Obama.

6. Bill did great last night. Terry said he had missed his 14 year olds last two birthdays so
he wasn't going to miss this one.

Give them a break. It is OK if they aren't there.

If the Clintons were there the camera's be on them 50% of the time looking for that one shot of the slightest grimace that "proves" they didn't really mean what they said in their speeches. The Clintons know the vulture our media is.

They have passed the baton to Obama and they are going to let him have this night to himself. Good for them.

30. Bill's staff also informed the press
That this is standard with Bill. He did not stay in 2000 or in 2004. Not a slight, if anything I think it helps clear the air and let the focus be on the person it needs to be on, Barack. But funny how they forget to mention the explanation, or the Repug agent did not spoon feed the reporter that part. I guess getting the scoop second hand makes it easy to do more important things than real reporting.

Bill did his part, wish the press would freeking move on. Did you see the "sketch book" linked to that article? WTF? The sketches where horrible characterizes and all the artist's comments about the women's looks were sexist and nasty. Good Job all around Guardian your corporate masters will be pleased.

33. Really he would be criticized either way
If he goes, MSM will be staring him down waiting for some form of reaction (maybe a controversial thing like sleeping or something). If he doesn't go, then people will say he's snubbing Obama.

My mom brought that to my attention.
