The Palin pick cheapens the achievements of Hillary Clinton.
Edited on Fri Aug-29-08 11:00 AM by mzmolly
Most who supported Hillary did not do so simply because she's a woman. They did so because she's brilliant, experienced and has the right vision for America. His pick demonstrates that McCain thinks of women as interchangeable, replaceable objects, who's votes are based upon anatomy alone. < That's my talking point, and I'm sticking to it! ;)

1. I'm not a woman, but I'm just as insulted by this pick.
I really hope Hillary Clinton comes out in full force and makes the same points you just did.

6. As a woman I couldn't be more insulted
I think its a disgusting cynical attempt to lure the female vote. I also feel it is insulting to Hillary as well. Palin isn't fit to shine Hillary's heels.

8. Hear hear!
They just don't get it do they? I could understand Kay Bailey Hutchison given her experience, but it appears that McCain is simply looking for an ornament, again?

21. My understanding is that Kay Bailey and McCain don't particularly like each other
which is probably why she isn't the pick.

9. Why do we always need to compare woman? Palin does nothing to cheapen Hillary...Palin...
Falls completely on her own.

I'm just a guy, but I'm sort of shocked how the PUMA folks were furious that Obama would consider Sebelius, as if only one woman in the election cycle could be chosen.

This is not my issue with Palin. My issue is she really is low on the list of qualified candidates on the Repub side, even if you only go with women. I think we'll be hearing the "Why not Kay Baily Hutchinson?" mantra quite a bit over the next week or so...

15. I'm not comparing her because she's a woman, I'm noting the fact that she would
not be his pick if she wasn't. Your point about her lacking qualifications further demonstrates my point above.

19. I agree. Women are individuals, just like men
I reject the notion that I or any other woman must act as an ambassador to the female gender at all times. If Palin cheapens the accomplishments of Hillary Clinton then Dan Qualye cheapened the accomplishments of other respected men. But no one ever made Quayle responsible for how the entire membership of his gender was perceived.

22. Quayle cheapened the office of VP. Are you suggesting that Palin
would have been the pick if Hillary wasn't an issue? PIFF.

like Kay Bailey Hutchison. That's my meme. She's unqualified with a capital U.

34. The same argument was said against Sebelius for VP...
That's what I disagree with. Not that Palin isn't completely unqualified or that McCain picked her to pick off disaffected Hillary voters - I don't doubt that was his reasoning. I would also agree that Hitchinson would have been a far better pick to do so.

But again, at some point I would like to see us not comparing every woman candidate with what some think is the "standard bearer." We don't have a male standard bearer, and I would hope the same thing occurs for women sooner than later.

And while I agree that Biden is a better choice than Sebelius (I actually wanted Biden before I knew about Obama), Sebelius was my strong second choice for a while, but I think her chances were ruined by a very similar argument to the one you put forward in the OP - that this would somehow cheapen Hillary's accomplishments. I just strongly disagree with that.

35. You're missing the point.
I don't think Hillary's accomplishments ARE actually cheapened, I think the R's have a complete disregard for them and have demonstrated that with their pick.

26. McCain picked her simply because she is a woman, regardless of qualifications. Dole and Hutchison
are more qualified than Palin.

13. It's actually pretty sexist for McCondo to choose Palin
Like you said, he assumes she's "a chick" like Hillary. Hey, "chicks" can be moms, mayors, basketball stars in tiny towns and of course, be in beauty contests. Add that Palin doesn't think women are smart enough to take care of their own decisions and should have the government decide their reproductive choices.

McCain is one transparent ass. Choosing Palin was a sexist choice.

republican party. This only solidifies the notion that republicans are all about show and have absolutely no substance whatsoever. Instead of taking a new direction by choosing stateswomen and men, they do the obvious thing by putting a pretty bandaid on a rotting corpse.

I hope they keep Rove around, he's only digging a bigger grave for the republican brand that will take decades to climb out of, if at all. I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually latch on to the "libertarian" brand to cut themselves loose from the disaster that is now the republican party.

I LOVE this pick and the American public will see right through it's intentions.
