Palin's Positives?

Come on, let's think here. McCain has a whole team vetting VP candidates. They're not idiots. They know her obvious negatives. So there has to be more to Palin than being an ex-beauty queen, a Britney Spears (as one DU'er called her).

He chose her over Romney and Huckabee and a whole host of others. So what does McCain see as her positives? Can it really be as simple as she's a woman?

She had a big fight with the oil companies over Alaska's natural gas pipeline. They were very angry with her because she didn't just GIVE them what they wanted. She chose the company that would give the best deal to the STATE... which turned out to be a Canadian company. My understanding is that BP and Exxon were furious with her.

She also confronted a lot of corruption in the Alaskan Republican party. A lot of thugs up there hate her for that, but she is immensely popular with the people.

They are going to portrait her as the female "maverick". Someone who will stand up to corporations and corruption to do what is right for the people.

27. From the standpoint of McCain and the repubs, here are her "positives"

1. She reassures the fundie anti-abortion, pro-gun voters.
2. She fits with his alleged "maverick" and "change" theme.
3. She is not a wealthy multiple home owning type -- her husband, I understand, has a pretty blue collar-ish career background and both he and she are outdoorsy types, which plays well with a lot of voters (allows them to play up the "elitist" theme).

Now, that's not to say that she doesn't have downsides or that they won't outweigh the "positives" in enough voters minds to make it a bad choice (as opposed to a neutral or good choice). Too early to predict that. The one thing that is clear is that if McCain has even a cold during the campaign, it will be a big problem for the repubs because voters may be willing to overlook the inexperience issue in the abstract, but they won't necessarily be willing to look the other way if they're more actively reminded of McCain's health.

She hunts, she fishes, she rides snow mobiles. Her husband is a roughneck.

I think it's an attempt to solidify Montana, North Dakota, Nevada, Alaska, and other western states that Obama may have made inroads in.

She's worked on ethics issues. Just what I read in Wikipedia; that's about the only research I've done on her. She's a Washington outsider too. This can help McCain look like he's got more to offer in the way of getting changes made in Washington. He'll point out Palin's experience with reform in Alaska.

Trust me. It's going to play well with Young Republicans.

Those who think that McCain will die in office may be uncomfortable, but if he doesn't, then in 8 years, she will be "properly seasoned"... and "ready to lead".

She is SOOOOOOOOO conservative, that she's a paradox and she can't be put into small boxes. A new young mother who is a governor. An evangelical Christian who takes a leadership role in politics and out-earns her husband. A pro-life hunter (that "slays" me, but they never see it). A gorgeous, sexy woman who went from mayor to governor... and maybe to VP. Talk about an American SUCCESS story!

I think we're in deep, deep sh*t here. I ***PROMISE*** that young Republicans are going to come out in DROVES to support this ticket. In fact, probably every Republican who can live with a woman in the White House is going to accept this compromise.

It's time for us to stop laughing and get busy. If we let this ticket get elected, we are GUARANTEED to have 8-16 more years of Republicans.
