Thomas Eagleton
The Vice Presidential candidate on the ticket with George McGovern in 1972. Eagleton was elected as the Senator from Missouri in 1968. Once named as the VP choice he was hounded by the press and the opposition regarding electric shock treatments (2 treatments) he underwent in the early to mid 1960's. Eventually the issue became too much of a distraction for the McGovern campaign. He resigned and was replaced by Sargent Shriver. Eagleton went on to continue to serve in the senate until 1987. McGovern lost the election.

My point.. all these issues that have been raised since the announcement of Sarah Palin as McCain's VP choice may dissipate in the next few days; troopergate, milkgate, mommygate and babygate. Then again they may not and may become a major distraction for the McCain campaign.

If they do become a distraction, much like the McGovern/Eagleton situation, Gov Palin may be dropped from the ticket. If that happens, no matter who McCain replaces her with, his campaign is doomed. His poor judgment on view for the whole country to see. Senator McCain will have to bend over, grab his ankles and kiss goodbye any dreams he had of being the President of the United States.
