John Kerry likely to win US polls: Najamuddin

HYDERABAD: Former foreign secretary Najamuddin Shaikh has said John Kerry will win the US elections because there is deep anger among the Democrats and this will ensure that they turn out for the polls in larger numbers than has traditionally been the case.

He was addressing an international conference at the Sindh University on "Human Security" in collaboration with Hanns Seidel Foundation. Ambassadors, scholars, writers, professors and teachers attended the conference. Among them were former ambassador Maqbool Bhatti, Prof Pervaiz Iqbal Cheema, Dr Sayed Sikandar Mehdi, Prof Mehtab Ali Shah, foreign professors Dr Shaheen Afroze (Bangladesh), Dr Laura Yerekesheva (Kazakhstan), Prof Zhang Li, Vice Chancellor Prof Mazharul Haq Siddiqi, Prof Lutufullah Mangi.

Najamuddin said most importantly, the outrage and fury prompted by the American invasion has not only made America hated throughout the Arab and Muslim world but has made Iraq what it never was under Saddam’s odious and ruthless rule — a haven for extremists.

He said Iraq has now become, according to American analysts and officials, the venue for insurgents from all over the Arab world. He said they pursue their own agenda of fomenting sectarian strife in Iraq, of indiscriminately attacking nationals of countries that have only the welfare of Iraq at heart and only occasionally attack the well-armed American forces.

Sometime ago the Americans claimed that given the success of American intelligence operation in cooperation with regional allies, al-Qaeda was in disarray but they also conceded that other groups were working independently to serve the same objectives that al-Qaeda has set for itself.

I think this is an interesting analysis from a member of government of one of the "Coalition of the Willing" countries.
