Police have stormed the crowd at 16th st and Irving. People are being thrown against cars. It appears they are targeting perceived "leaders" of the group, arresting them, removing them from crowd.

1000 people are leaving from Union Square. Secret Service reportedly spotted in the area. People were heading east on 16th st. But are currently stopped by the police at 16 and Irving.

There are anywhere from 200 to 1000 people at 16th and Irving, near Union sq. Police are not allowing anyone to leave. A woman is reportedly having a panic attack. The infernal noise brigade is surrounded by police at Union Sq. east.

People are breaking through the nets at 34th and Broadway. 5 people have tied themselves to the barricades. Reportedly police are even being "very aggressive" with corporate media in this area.

16. Update from Indymedia - beatings - pepper spray - mass arrests - RIGHT NOW

OVERVIEW OF CURRENT SITUATION: Action is taking place all over the city. There are 3 main points, where events are unfolding - 16th street and Irving (near Union Sq.): mass arrests are imminent, reports of beatings and people not being allowed to leave. Harold Square (6th ave. between 34th and 36th): people are being beaten, pepper sprayed and contained. 28th and Broadway: War Resisters League has been holding a die-in of 50 people in the middle of the street.

At 6th ave between 34th and 36th sts people have put on hoods representing abu-graib-style prison abuse. They have tied themselves to metal barricades with rope. Media is there documenting, request for more people to come.

Update on Jonny Cash action at 41st and York, earlier today: it wrapped up at 7 o'clock , cops were overwhelming, occasionally letting ppl out. Protesters sang loud, delegates were made to feel "ashamed" of being in this city. Approx. 600 protestors, 100 cops.

Police have arrested an African-American male at Union Square on Broadway. He was picked up quickly by a dozen police officers who said he "committed a crime yesterday."

At the intersection of W.35th and Broadway there are 12 people sitting down in front of delegate buses, preventing them from passing. Virtually no police presence at the moment. They are chanting "NYPD arrest Bush, not me!"
