Ohio poll just mind blowing, what the hell
is the matter with this state?

Some highlights:

McCain leads 48-42 for Obama
47% of voters say they are worse off than in 2004.
81% of Democrats support Obama
85% of Republicants support McSame
Believe it or not 65% support providing health care for all Americans, even if it means raises taxes.

What the f--- are these people thinking?

2. I agree that the top number is puzzling. The internals show INDs going for Obama
and Dems have a registration advantage in Ohio. So how is it mathematically possible for McCain to lead by 6.

The only answer is that the poll oversampled Republicans.

17. Wow... I can't believe that some in this thread are taking that poll at face value
after seeing that Obama leads in INDs and that Dems outnumber Reps in Ohio. I repeat:they oversampled Republicans in "likely voters". Otherwise the top number makes no sense

3. This poll was conducted between the 10th and 16th
And does not reflect the economic situation that has developed.

27. Yes, it is hard to imagine Ohio not swinging blue this year because of the economic crisis, plus gas
prices, etc.

4. I actually think Ohio will be the toughest to win of the swing-states.
This may be my Michigander bias, but I think there's just too much racism there.

I actually think that Virginia, Michigan and even Colorado are much more doable than Ohio.

Every time I've filled in one of those electoral vote predictors, I've made Ohio red. Sorry Ohioans. :(

12. No Franklin Co. people to call.
If y'all don't know, practically all of Columbus, OH has not had power in the last week due to hurricane Ike's passage. Therefore, a major metropolitan area has been removed from the sample......many, many land-line phones were out along with the power.

That might explain a 12 point shift in a week (Obama was up 4 in the last OH poll).

26. not just Columbus... I live just outside Cleveland...
...the bluest part of the state, and I got my power back on Saturday afternoon. There were 300,000 people in the Cleveland metro area without power for a week - including phones. LANDLINE phones, not just cells which couldn't be re-charged, and cable-based phones, but landlines too. Neighbor across the street, with only a landline, had to have me use my cell to call in the outage Sunday afternoon.

23. Agree with the No Phones/power issues post
the entire state of Ohio is not a hotbed of racism, and to imply so without knowing that on Sunday the 14th more than 2.6 MILLION people lost power here for more than 48 hours, and more than one 900,000 statewide were still without power Wednesday the 17th...250,000 of those were in Central Ohio, in big Dem counties, is not paying any attention.

Hardly anyone was able to get a landline call between 6:00 PM Sunday the 14th and 6:00 PM Wednesday the 17th. No power, therefore no landlines phones (for the most part)...unless you had a genie, and those were all gone within 2 hours of power outage.

Columbus public schools were closed for 4 days (M-Thursday) due to significant areas without power. A man died down the street from the hurricane knocking a tree over on to him as he was walking out of the garage.

This poll will correct itself when people in the sample group can actually be reached. NOT because of racism. (I will admit there will be some of that, but no more or less than in Michigan).

No offense to anyone who lives there, but Ohio seem to have an overabundance of 'low information voters'.

10. This poll only has Obama down by 1 point in OH
McCain also leads by a one-point margin in Ohio, up 47-46 percent. No Republican has won the White House without winning Ohio, which has 20 electoral votes at stake.

The Ohio poll of polls consists of three surveys: Big Ten Battleground (September 14-17), CNN/Time/ORC (September 14-16), and Ohio Newspaper Poll/University of Cincinnati (September 12-16).

Though in reality, he should be beating McBush by 20! Still too many people are simply --- stupid!!!

days ago Biden was here, the headlines he somehow made a slam against Ohio State. Other than that I don't know what he said.

13. They're thinking "Wait--Obama's BLACK?"
Much of southern Ohio is very poor, very rural and very white. But I'd take this poll with a grain of salt: the article doesn't tell us anything about how it's weighted in terms of party ID or region. If black people in Ohio are allowed to register and vote, Obama has a good chance of carrying the state.

OTOH, there's the guy who worked for the company that McCain was instrumental in outsourcing--who is supporting McCain "because he'll keep taxes low." He lost his job, but he wants the people who screwed him out of it to pay lower taxes. Criminy.

but from a couple of articles I gleaned that Dems do have a registration edge in Ohio

19. IM IN OHIO, READ ME!
I live in Canton, Ohio, Stark County. I have protested against Palin when she came to Canton, and seen Michelle and Biden at rallies here in Canton. I have only seen one McCain bumper sticker, and several Obama bumper stickets. I've seen several Obama signs, and no McCain signs. I went to Cedar Point yesterday which is in Sandusky, Ohio, very close to Michigan. I seen about 5 Obama shirts, and 1 shirt that said McMilf.

I don't know why the polls show McCain winning in Ohio, I am SO EMBARRASSED. I believe as more news comes out about Palin, and McCain and Palin LOSE the debates, the tide will turn. Obama will win either FL, OH, or both, and take this election. I just hope trooper-gate gets exposed Oct. 10th and runs their campaign into the ground.

22. I'm here too, sort of in the middle
along the Ohio river, the McCain yard signs are everywhere and I can only recall seeing one Obama sign. I would not put a sign in my yard or on my car for fear of vandalism to my property. What's bad this area has been the most affected by the Bush economy. The only people that seem to support Obama are the Unions and they are few and far between these days.

You have my sympathies. :D

Like you said, the debates will be game-changers and more news about Palin will hit the fan in the coming weeks. Trooper-Gate, Rape-Gate....

Welcome to DU! :toast:

My entire immediate family still lives there. The non-religious/not-seriously religious half of the family are Ds, the rest are Rs.

25. Fear and racism.
They'd rather stay stuck in their inertia, even if it means their personal and economic destruction. How else to explain the opinion of a letter writer to a community newspaper, an out-of-work man who said he was voting for McCain because he didn't trust Obama's policies and that McCain represents real change. Toward the end of of the letter the man admitted that maybe McCain would be more of the McSame, but that didn't matter either, because at least under Bush, the man had a job.

How can you penetrate such stupidity and illogic as that?

And, there is the race question. Not all Ohioans are ready to vote for an African-American. I grew up in a neighborhood in Dayton where suspicions of race were very, very high. This was back in the 1960s and 1970s, and I guarantee you, things have not changed, even as the neighborhood has become more integrated.

The story I read about this poll actually had a quote from someone in rural Ohio that said that people are putting their Obama signs in fields, rather than in yards, out of fear of community reaction.

When you get right down to it, we have just not progressed very far on many levels. That's why this state is dying.
