So it appears Letterman isn't letting up on McCain anytime soon.
http://www.salon.com/wires/ap/entertainment/2008/09/25/D93E24U82_mccain_letterman/index.html

Sep 25th, 2008 | NEW YORK -- "Late Show" host David Letterman kept up a verbal assault on John McCain Thursday, saying he felt like an "ugly date" because the GOP presidential candidate backed out of a scheduled appearance on his talk show.

He said he felt like a "patriot" to let McCain off his commitment to deal with the economy and "now I'm feeling like an ugly date."

"That's what I feel like, I feel like an ugly date," he said. "I feel used. I feel cheap. I feel sullied."

"Here's how it works: you don't come to see me? You don't come to see me? Well, we might not see you on Inauguration Day," Letterman said.

The Septmeber Rolling Stone Mag had Letterman on the front with a bunch of other comedians(Chris Rock for one) but the interview was with Letterman.

I had just finished reading the interview when Obama came on Letterman last week! I thought I was in Democratic heavenO8)

Caught on Camera: John McCain Lied to David Letterman
The Price of Lying to Someone Who Talks to Millions

Note to John McCain: It was not a smart move to lie to David Lettermen.

There are some people in the world that you just don't want to get angry at you. Powerful people can make your life miserable. Powerful comedians can make your life miserable and humiliating at the same time. Powerful comedians with their own nightly broadcast can let the entire world in on your humiliation.

After Senator John McCain made his historic and unprecedented announcement that he would suspend his campaign, he canceled his upcoming appearance on CBS' "The Late Show with David Letterman." According to Letterman, Senator McCain called him personally and said he was headed to the airport to rush off to Washington to work on the economic crisis. Letterman, however, found out that McCain was actually at CBS to do a last-minute interview with Katie Couric.

Keith Olbermann, the MSNBC host of "Countdown" was filling in for the absent McCain when it appears that Letterman found out about McCain's duplicity. Getting a live feed from CBS' in-house cameras, Letterman interrupted his interview with Keith Olbermann to show the audience McCain preparing for the Couric interview. He said, "He doesn't seem to be racing to the airport, does he?" And when McCain was actually being interviewed by Couric, Letterman yelled at the monitor, ""Hey, John, I got a question! You need a ride to the airport?"

<SNIP>

Some might think that it is no big deal, that raising the ire of someone like Letterman or Leno is a momentary sound bite or slight mistake that will even itself out in the end. And this might have been the case if David Letterman had not caught the Senator in a lie. And then broadcast it to millions.

The lie would not be so bad if it were left to be forgotten. But David Letterman is known for his running gags and serial jokes. This could become a late night nightmare for the McCain campaign.

<SNIP>

>~~~~~~~~~> But the McCain lie could become a problem. Jay Leno, Craig Ferguson, and Conan O'Brien are going to run with it. So will talk show hosts and pundits. Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert will not be able to stop themselves.

The story has already swept the internet.

18. My guess is that McCain had no plans to do an interview with Katie last night...
But when Palin's handlers saw the train wreck taping of Palin's interview, they went into emergency damage control mode, and sent McCain over to cbs news for an "exclusive". But McCain made a huge mistake for not calling Dave back, and explain to him the problem they were in. Bottom line. Damage done, big time.

Keith Olbermann highlighted this article on his show tonight.

Letterman’s Cronkite Turn

Forty years ago, in September 1968, the North Vietnamese launched the Tet offensive — which changed mainstream America’s view of the Vietnam War. In living rooms across the nation, Americans saw a gruesome display of how powerless the United States forces looked as they struggled to gain control over a millitary conflict they would not win.

It was then that Walter Cronkite, the CBS news anchor who narrated the daily events for millions of people each night, called Vietnam “unwinnable.” In the White House, President Lyndon B. Johnson said, “If I’ve lost Cronkite, I’ve lost middle America.”

Now, we are in a different kind of war, one where U.S. financial insolvency seems at risk. Looking at this crisis, Sen. John McCain has said he would suspend his campaign. This included canceling an interview with CBS “Late Show” host David Letterman last night. Letterman said McCain was preparing to head to Washington in an effort to save the country.

The reaction was something the likes of which we’ve never seen.

A furious Letterman called out McCain and, without using the word “liar,” ran live feed of McCain preparing to do an interview with CBS News anchor Katie Couric at the precise moment he was taping.

This included canceling an interview with CBS “Late Show” host David Letterman last night. Letterman said McCain was preparing to head to Washington in an effort to save the country.

The reaction was something the likes of which we’ve never seen.

Letterman even suggested this was all linked to McCain’s recent fall in national polls. “When you call up at the last minute and cancel, that’s not the John McCain I know,” Letterman said. More than once he suggested that “something smells right now.”

Now, Letterman is no Cronkite. He’s not even Ed Sullivan.

But he is the face that millions of Americans see before turning in for the night. For years, McCain has appeared on his show, even announcing his intention to run for president on the program. And to have the affable Letterman visibly boil and go on the offensive showed that, perhaps, McCain, whose campaign has stumbled since the beginning of this economic crisis, is in bigger trouble than one would think.

Perhaps McCain won’t say,“If I’ve lost Letterman, I’ve lost middle America.” Does Letterman even say his audience is “middle America?”

But one wouldn’t be surprised if the Republican candidate began to smell a strong odor seeping into the vents of the Straight Talk Express.

Mr Letterman is a center right, very moderate, common sense independent from what I have seen. The McCain campaign is in serious trouble.

25. Dave can be hot and cold. Last night he was on fire.
Some nights it seems like he's just going through the motions. Like he's following a formula. Other times, particularly when he gets a serious guest on, he shows that he's well-read and can conduct an interview on the level of a seasoned journalist.

I could tell last night he was pissed, and he let McCain have it with both barrels.
